Push-ups are a very challenging exercise to start with, ESPECIALLY if you haven't done much workout for a while. If I get out of it and have trouble, I start off doing push-ups on an angle, using the counter or the stairs. It's easier and lets me build back up to full pushups over a few days/weeks instead of exhausting myself.
