Description It's that time again!
Chances are that I'm gonna just go with this one since I'm running a little short on time, but that doesn't mean that I don't want crits, so...

Advanced Critique is ON!

Big thanks to everyone that critiqued the last one; you've all been a big help! I'll try and get back to people soon as I can. Also there was apparently an issue with the looping on the last one. Just so you know, it loops automatically so if it's not doing so for you, right click and check the option. If it's still not looping, refresh the browser and it should work.

Righto, this one still isn't quite perfect but I can make any changes on the final version. Truth be told, I'm probably
going into too much detail as it is for the purpose of what this is for, but I wanna learn.

Anyway, the head movement isn't perfect and neither is the tail , but at least this time it actually looks more like a lion than some sort of deformed puma/dog/thing. And look! Ears! Now quit complainin' :/

Just kidding. But really, rip it up people

Ah, that's something I'd really love to do but I've got certain limitations on this one. Still, it's great to have the suggestion there, so thanks

I understand. Kinda hard to gauge limitations from a pass through of notes from others. I'm glad you liked the ideas and I hope you succeed on this task! Good luck!

I'm happy with the tail shape - curve and movement The shoulderblades are nicely emphasized too - the rythme is fluid and natural - You definetely did a good job

Yeah, this one's definately better than the last one

I'll be honest and say I preferred the one you did before. I know someone said it was weird the way the head came straight out the legs but by looking at lions (and even other animals like horses) that's kind of the way it is. Their shoulder muscles and breast muscles are kind of combined.

Also, nothing in particular but why go for realism? I mean, exaggerated always looks better in animation. If you want perfect realism all you need to do is rotoscope but it never looks as good!

funkyalien In reply to June-bug [2008-05-01 15:31:09 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, very good point It's more the fact that I've never animated anything like a lion before and I'm going to have to do it quite a few times over the next few weeks, so it'd be good for me to know how to do it right before I start going for anything more stylised. At least this way I've found out everything that was wrong with it before, in both motion and anatomy.
I also couldn't find any good files that I could import to Toon Boom to rotoscope on anyway, though it never really crossed my mind to do that

One little thing, its probably not that important, but the right front paw. I feel that it should be curled a little longer, it looks like its flicked foward to fast.
(If that made any sense)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to Timatae [2008-05-02 08:28:07 +0000 UTC]

It made sense Truthfully, it's on the same timing as the front left paw, but I can see that it still flicks forward too quickly. I'd have liked to add more frames to fix it all but I have to work within certain limitations on this one.
Thanks for pointing it out

This one is improved from the last one because it looks like the body has weight to it and you can see that impression upon the legs. Adding in the shoulders was a nice touch as well very well done.

As for something to look at it's hard to say imho, but maybe add a tiny bit more weight. Strangely every lion/lioness i've seen does this kind of hunching walk. They put weight onto one paw then shift it to another when they arn't hunting.

funkyalien In reply to Amana07 [2008-05-02 08:25:50 +0000 UTC]

Animating weight is something I really need to work on. I've known that for a while though, so when I can, I'll get to practicing
Thanks for pointing it out though, I knew it was there but it's good to have it confirmed in my mind.

I can deffinately see more weight in your second picture and your deffinately improving upon it. If you need inspiration you could check out the animal planet big cat specials. They show alot of great footage of stalking, running, and idling kitties.

what about the shoulder...I know the shoulder in cats looks...well i dunno pointy?..like u can see it coming out thier back as they walk.
but also just a thought..does the head hang low or not on a lion...
lol do they waggle to and fro,...can u tie it - ok im done but seriously does it hang low

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to Remus-Lupo [2008-05-01 14:59:42 +0000 UTC]

When they walk it does, yeah. When they're standing still they raise their heads.
As for the shoulders, they could use more work but that's something I can fix

sykomantis [2008-05-01 14:38:26 +0000 UTC]

Let's see... how to put this? I think the stomach isn't as round as you've drawn. Like, it should be flatter as it moves from the front towards the pelvis. You shouldn't be able to see that much of the stomach hanging down when the left hind leg moves backwards. If anything the stomach should almost connect with the top of the leg, I think. Does that make any sense?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to sykomantis [2008-05-01 14:54:01 +0000 UTC]

It does, but again (according to the video references from the last one and an anatomy drawing I found) a lion's stomach is surprisingly round. This probably depends on the lion's age and such, but in general it's not as flat as expected.
Surprised me, I'll tell you.

very well done! it's much better than the last one, but you also cleaned it up a bit, so it should be.
the closest shoulder blade i think should disappear more however... i think that it almost completely disappears when the leg is lifted. but other than that, great work!

This one looks worlds better than the last one, lots of improvement. I personally think that the ribcage and abdomen should be a bit more defined and tapered towards the rear, but other than that I think it's working very well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funkyalien In reply to TooDeliciousOrange [2008-05-01 14:26:52 +0000 UTC]

Hm. Having actually draw this from the skeleton up, I wonder how I managed to draw the ribcage so far forward. Wasn't like that on the skeleton
Ah, it's a thing I can fix easily enough. Thanks for pointing it out

fullthrottle In reply to ??? [2008-05-01 14:09:02 +0000 UTC]

not sure how to explain it but i'll give it a try, one it seems as though he is a little stiff while walking, not sure what type of research you have done for the movement of a big cat but i'd suggest if you can find any videos on real ones moving to watch how they move, how their muscles react. Also another good watch is the lion king or even Tarzan for the leopard. really what I'm trying to say is push its movements a bit more. Not sure if this helps any. but keep up the great work, can't wait to see more

funkyalien In reply to fullthrottle [2008-05-01 14:19:24 +0000 UTC]

According to all the vids that people linked to in the last one, lions don't really move their backs too much at all. It's mostly the rear that have the most bounce to it, it would appear. I'm not claiming to be right, but it's possible that people are thinking more of regular house cats where there'd be more movement in the spine?

Part of the stiffness probably comes from the head not bobbing at the right time though, since it makes the whole spine look rigid. That might be sorted out in the final if I've time though.

Thanks for the crit

AN1ME [2008-05-01 13:58:27 +0000 UTC]

this is good animation hun.

(i'm not very good at critiquing -sp- on animation, but i'll give it my best)

the head movement is good, the tail needs to bend abit more as the lion is moving, i do agree with the previous devaint who commented on the back, but i'll add more to it, the back needs to dip in abit more as it moves (not sure if that sounds right)

but i do love the lil bounce that goes with the movement of the lion's legs

(sorry if what i wrote was utter silly) <<;

funkyalien In reply to AN1ME [2008-05-01 14:15:36 +0000 UTC]

No no, that was fine.
Actually according to all the reference I have for lions walking, their backs don't flex very much at all. If anything, I've overdone it here. It seems to be more the rear end that raises more often, really.

I can fix up the tail when I go for the finished one. I just threw in some loose movement to work with.

Thanks very much for the crit

ahhh, i must of been thinking of the cheetah when i wrote about the flexing back

~really? i assumed that their backs flex....hmmm... i learned something new today

you're welcome about the crit hun

I assumed the same, but it seems it's more something you see one cheetahs and smaller or more slender cats.
The more you know...

Indeed that's true. Something I noticed while watching various vidsbut didn't really get across here. It's something I'll fix up in the final version or any future animations of lions.
