Description
The more I design, the more I realize the importance of keeping things more simple and graphic. Don't worry aboutsmall shapes like eyes, mouth, teeth, little details in general. Solve the bigger problems. What's the overall shape? Are the
proportions sound? How can I simplify the shapes? Etc.. Notice on these I have not drawn in eyes or the mouth. Interior detail
wise I spend most of my time looking for the person's, simplified socket, nose and muzzle shape. I want to keep things clear and really simple.
If I don't have likeness at this point, and likeness is the goal, rendering eyes and lips will be a waste of time.

So simple, yet so incredibly profound. I wish all art classes started with this little bit of advice.

The most helpful advice on drawing portraits I've found in the internet. Thank you!

it also makes a ton of sense:
when your foundation is sound, all that can happen is details somewhat askew, but, overall, in the right place and in the right general shape, making the right general impression.
if you ever find some time for it, would you mind elaborating a bit on those two generic head shapes?

No problem. There's only one generic head shape. It's a blank manikin
head. I'll do a blank demo soon

How do you personally go about practicing a lot of different headshapes in order to get a big bank to pull from and mix when designing original characters? I feel like I always draw the same face shape over and over, and all of your faces look SO distinct from one another.

The main key head that I think is a need to know is called the "Eric" generic
head. Literally gotta know how to draw the eric head from all views with simple planes.
This is not as easy as it seems. There's a progression into head shapes after.
There are three masses of the head which are very distinct along with 5 distinctive planes.
It's easier to work from generic to specific when learning.
When starting out I was trained to draw eric and erica. Gotta build your mental manikin.
This gives you something to compare too, without it; you'll always be guessing.
Hope this helps.
