Pretty much. Studies help because there's no guessing after. But even before I do that, I do little comps/doodles to figure out what I want. Usually I find a little story while I doodle. Example : I want to paint some characters fighting. Some questions I answer in the doodle. Why are they fighting? Is someone winning? Body type? It's the best part. Then O try to find elements to get that idea across. Some are more successful than others.
