What method do you use to convert the grey luminances to color? A color layer?

Color layer and I paint on top with a normal layer. I don't usually paint this way. Usually do a color comp and go at it. Wanted to try the color layer for this painting.

I actually can't even fathom how his extra arms factor into his muscle and skeletal structure. It'd be an interesting anatomical study though.
