Description
Hi thereReasons to celebrate :
- This is the first piece that I did which is ... meaningful haha
- I'm going to university in 5 days
- I finished my first commission
- It's been 5 years, and my beautiful Wacom CTE-440 is still holding up
~~
So this is a very personal piece.
Initially, I wanted it to portray rebirth ... (the original title). The concept is still there. Subtle
What ? A poppy in a field ? rawr ?
Starting off with the poppy -
It symbolises rest, sleep and death.
The colours that make up the girl's dress point towards to poppy ... minus the yellow ... we'll get to that later.
This is still a little blurry in my head, but the girl is the poppy.
The hair covers her left arm/part of her chest.
Where do you keep your heart ?
The left side.
For me, this shows that we're always holding ourselves back when it comes to happiness.
Yellow, the typical colour I would associate with happiness. In terms of surface area, it covers very little of the dress.. but you notice it more than the grey, which covers most of the dress.
I purposely put the yellow next to the grey. What do you notice more ? The yellow.
Orange/blue hues put together - to show how these two associations were back-to-back ... there's no middle ground (wow, this would sound kind of crazy and confusing to someone who isn't ... me :3 Or maybe I'm just crazy
Finally, the butterfly is a symbol for rebirth.
Caterpillar -> Cocoon -> Butterfly
Life -> Death -> Life
Ah, yes, the colours on the butterfly .. poppy
(yellow for happiness, and white for the light bouncing off the petals)
~~
Sorry for explaining everything. I feel as if I'm in English class, poking my fingers at every symbol I can grab haha
So how does it all come together ?
Well, as I said, it's a very personal piece. It's purposely done before I leave to university. To symbolise the start of a new life. Blah !
But mainly, to symbolise that I'm putting some unpleasant things behind me, trying to reach for those little blots of yellow happiness :3
It took me a long time (hence the ratio between the grey area and the yellow area), but I feel that I did it
My close friends would probably read this and be like "OHHHH I get it !" whilst most of you guys will still be bewilidered. haha, I hope you enjoy the visuals at least
Ah, also the technical aspects ... I like ... I'm slowly moving away from anime style ... with lines ... *grimace*
For this piece, I only drew lines for her face/hands. Everything else (the dress, hair etc) was done ... just like that ... no lineart.... so much fun
I really don't like colouring inside the lines sometimes ... haha Especially when my lineart is sometimes really sketchy ...
*gasps for breath*
I hope you like this !!
Constructive criticism is always welcome ;D
EDIT: There's some camera info on the side ... sorry about that, it must've been when I was sketching away on Photoshop from the reference stock

This is so pretty~ Her dress is absolutely gorgeous, and she reminds me so much of a porcelain doll.

Thanks
I really had fun playing with the folds in the dress :3
I'd tell myself "ok, just finish that one fold, and go grocery shopping" ... eek 1 hour later I was still in front of my computer haha

Ah ! Good luck
I wonder if I can get a student discount on a new tablet (which I'll probably need in the next 12-15 months I imagine), even if I'm not an art student ... biochemistry ! haha

It doesn't matter if you are an art student or not. Go to TheAcademicsuperstore.com, or somethig along those lines, and simply register that you are a full time student and they will let you buy their products
