Description
In the Finale, all of the maiko and geiko performed on stage together while the jikata geiko sang about the seasons and scenic spots in Kyoto.Masayui had her misedashi (debuted as a maiko) a month ago in October. She reminds me a bit of my favorite maiko, Kikuyu, and I think Masayui's very cute but in a delicate and refined way. I think she's going to grow up to be a very elegant and chic geiko.

I have a question about those sleeves. It looks like there's a hem about a third of the way down, or that it's in two pieces. Is that because it's a costume?

That's tucked-up fabric, and it's a standard part of a maiko's kimono. There are matching tucks on her shoulders. Those tucks are a standard part of children's kimono, because children's kimono aren't designed to fit a child perfectly. Children's kimono come in a couple sizes and excess fabric is tucked up so that it will fit the child. Maiko were originally children when they started their career (before the WWII, a maiko could be as young as 11 or 12 when she started, now the youngest she can be is 15). While modern maiko don't wear children's sizes and don't need their fabric tucked up, they wear their kimono in this way in honor of their predecessors.
