Description
(This was a picture I did for my year 12 art and below is the blurb I had to write about it. As I'm tired and too lazy to write anything original all over again I'm just submitting this as is. (C) to me people, enjoy~)The creating of my second practical was both a great opportunity to explore different techniques and mediums as well as providing me with a way to honour my baby sister who is currently in the stages of fighting cancer. The ideas and concepts for this practical came very early on in the piece for me as I wanted a way to demonstrate both the physical fragility of children with cancer but contrastingly showcase their immense inward, emotional and mental strength. For this artwork I personally felt that the concepts would be better told using strong symbolism than merely doing a simple portrait of my sister, although the thought had been considered.
I decided to use the symbolism of the Japanese Ume blossom and the spider’s web. These were both symbols that resonated with me particularly strongly and I felt that they perfectly represented all of the children who stay in Randwick hospital where my mother and sister now live. The Ume blossom is a symbol of strength to the Japanese people because it blooms while it is still the middle of winter and can withstand the harsh winds and snow of a northern Japanese winter despite being a delicate flower. The strong imagery that came to mind when my tea ceremony teacher taught me of the Ume’s significance stayed with me and I planned on using it ever since. Similarly the spider’s web is said to be (proportionately) as strong as steel, even though physically speaking it appears to be frail.
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to visit my baby sister. I took the chance to do a quick photo shoot of her playing and decided to use one of the sketches from that series. The photograph that I chose was decided upon because her eyes are not visible and it creates within the painting a more ‘universal’ look as it could be any child and so the viewer’s focus is more on the representation rather than the child’s face. This was an important feature to me as I wanted not only to do an artwork about my sister, but all children going through the same thing.
(C) to me people, enjoy~

This is great, you made a good job!
I guess I know what your little sister is passing through... It's hard but we have to be strong, and your drawing exemplifies this really well, two nature things that can support anything they need to pass by.
When I had depression someone said to me "God don't put on our backs anything we can't handle". And I keep it in my thoughts since then.
All we need to do is have the hope that your baby sister will recover soon and be able to play around and be happy!
Again, great job!
