Description Jak took a deep, shaky breath. He had been called out of an important war meeting for this. He was nervous, but excited at the same time. In fact, Jak had to hold back from speeding multiple times. Kiera was in the hospital, but it would be a good day. It would be a good day, because Kiera was having a baby. Jak would be a father in a few hours.

He arrived at the hospital, extremely anxious. “Excuse me, nurse!” Jak called, maybe a little more demanding than planned. “I need to get to my wife! She’s in labor right now, and I need to be with her! Her name is Kiera!” The nurse shook her head to say ‘ok’ and went over to the reception desk. She talked to the receptionist for a few minutes, and then walked toward Jak.

“The only Kiera we have here is on the seventh floor, room 18.” She said.

“Thank you so much!” Jak exclaimed as he turned toward the elevator.

“You’re welc-” The nurse started to say, but couldn’t finish because Jak was already jumping up and down in the elevator, pressing the button frantically for the door to close.

When Jak arrived at the seventh floor, room 18, he was stopped by doctors that were just heading in. They told him that he wasn’t allowed into the room with Kiera yet. So, Jak was forced to sit in the waiting room, getting tenser by the minute. Then Jak heard screams, painful screams. He automatically got up and started running to room 18, but other people in the waiting room held him back. Jak couldn’t take it anymore. He was about to go into Dark Jak mode, he was so tense and anxious. But then he heard crying. However, this crying was different than what Jak usually heard. The cries belonged to a baby.

A doctor opened the door, shut it quietly, and walked toward Jak. She smiled, “Would you like to see your son?”

Jak jumped. He was waiting for this moment, and he was excited. But now, for some strange reason, he was nervous. He was afraid, but he didn’t know why. “Yes.” He got up, and walked to room 18. He took in a deep breath, and opened the door. Jak saw his wife, who was tired, but smiling. She was holding a tiny figure, wrapped in a green blanket. Then Kiera looked up at Jak, and beamed. “He’s perfect. Here, hold your son.”

Jak walked over cautiously, and looked at the little bundle. He was speechless. Then Kiera handed the bundle to him. Jak cradled the package like it was made of glass. He looked down at the tiny face peeking out of the green blanket. The baby woke up suddenly, revealing bright, royal blue eyes. A little tuft of sapphire-violet hair poked out of the blanket. Jak could only smile proudly at the little infant.

“What do you wanna name him, Jak?” Kiera said weakly. Jak thought for a minute as he looked into the infant’s eyes. Then he knew the perfect name for his son.

“Damas. I want to name him Damas.” Jak wanted to honor his father somehow, and he knew that’s how he would do it.

“Yes, that’s a perfect name for him. Damas.” Kiera replied as her eyelids drooped slowly.
Jak smiled at his sleeping wife, and walked toward the window with his little son held close.

“Damas.” Jak said in a soft voice. Damas looked up carefully. “Hi! I’m your daddy! And this,” Jak paused, “this is your new home.” He bent his head down to kiss the tiny forehead of his son. It was a moment so perfect, so magical, that Jak couldn’t even dream about it.

Jak didn’t even hear the doctor come in the room. “Excuse me, but we have to take the baby into another room to make sure it is completely healthy. He’ll be back in your arms in no more than an hour.” She smiled sweetly.

Jak just stared at her for a few seconds, but then reluctantly placed his son in her arms. As she started to walk away, the baby started to cry. Then she turned around again. “O yes, what is the baby’s name?” the nurse asked, rocking the baby back and forth.

“Damas.” Jak replied, “His name is Damas.”

“Ok. Thank you.” She turned and walked away. Damas started crying even more, and louder. Jak wanted to run after the doctor and hold his son close, rocking him to a gentle sleep. But he restrained himself.

About a half an hour later, a nurse ran into the room. “Jak, we have a problem. It’s your son!” and she ran back out.

Jak panicked. He could only think of the tiny face he saw in his arms earlier. He sprinted out of the room, leaving his sleeping wife. He sprinted to the cluster of doctors and nurses gathered outside a room with a large window. Jak noticed there was something different about the hallway too, but didn’t pay much attention to that. He pushed past the crowd to see inside the window. Jak saw that there were no doctors, but a creature in the room instead. It was tiny, with black eyes, and gray skin. Its fingernails were sharp and pointed, and the little tuft of hair was a blackened sapphire color. It was wrapped in a green blanket. Jak couldn’t breath. He knew those features personally, and he knew what the dark purple charges coming out from the creature’s skin were. It was dark eco, and the creature was his son!

“OUT OF MY WAY!” Jak bellowed. He headed toward the door.

“Sir, you can’t go in there! It’s too dangerous!” A few doctors shouted.

“THAT’S MY SON!” He screamed this time, eyes flashing from blue to black, and then back again. No doctor held him back this time. He yanked the door open and ran towards his dark son. Jak froze for a second. He realized that it was his fault. His son was like that because of him. He swallowed back the tears. Then he picked his son up, and cradled him gently. He stroked his gray skin until it became a normal flesh color again. The eyes returned to their brilliant royal blue, and his hair returned to the sapphire-violet color. The infant was human again.

Jak looked down at his son again, only this time everything was blurry. Jak’s eyes were full of tears. In fact, he cried the first tears in over twenty years. It was his fault his son was a monster. It was his fault the boy was like Jak. He wiped the tears from his eyes and looked closer at the infant. Damas was sweating, and exhausted. But, he opened his eyes again, and looked at his father. The blue eyes seemed to say, ‘Daddy’.

Jak walked out of the room with his son, and this time all the doctors jumped out of the way. Jak glared at their frightened faces once, and then kept his eyes glued to his son. When he walked into Kiera’s room, she was awake. She looked at him curiously. “Where’d you go with him?” She didn’t know about the other side to her child yet.

“Kiera!” Jak started to sob, “Damas has Dark powers. It’s all my fault!” He handed the baby to Kiera and turned away to hide his tears. He could feel Kiera’s shock at what he said.

Her reaction wasn’t what Jak expected, however. She looked down at Damas, and smiled. Then, she whispered, “Well, your daddy’s just gonna have to help you control all that power now, isn’t he?” She looked up at Jak. “Jak, just because he’s got your Dark powers doesn’t mean he’s not our son. He’s not a monster.” Her optimism amazed Jak. He turned around. Kiera looked back down at her child and lightly tickled him with one finger. She looked back up at Jak. “It’s gonna be okay. Trust me.”

Jak walked over to Kiera. He stood beside her, and put his right hand on her shoulder. Jak put his left hand on Damas’ head. He looked at the tiny face in the blanket, little fingers peeking out. Jak looked into the innocent face, and saw something promising. He saw hope. He didn’t know how he saw it, but he just knew it was inside the infant. Jak’s frustration at himself disappeared for now. And to replace the frustration, was joy. Pure joy. “Ok.” Jak whispered. “I trust you.” And Jak himself, had hope for the first time in years.
