Description
A group of soldiers rested upon a calm shoreline.
War torn and tired, they sighed in relief.
The wars are over, the treaty has been signed.
They awaited the ship that would send them home.

The leader received a letter from home.
An upset within the family brings stress to his brow.
The others try to comfort him and ask of the problem.
He refuses to tell them and walks away.

They chase after him and plead with him to tell.
He finally confesses, but only to a few of them.
One gets shut out, not important enough to know.
Frustration comes from the rejected one.

Days go by, still no ship to bring them home.
The leader still shuns the one of his men.
The rejected soldier asks why he’s treated this way.
Only to have his question unanswered.

A second soldier sees the pain in the rejected one.
He goes to listen to what the other has to say.
He learns the story and tries to persuade the leader to speak.
His request was replied to with cold refusal.

The leader discovered a hut in the jungle.
It seems sturdy, a small shelter for a little while.
He seeks refuge, always talking about it to the group.
The group heard of nothing else since.

Weeks go by, no ship to bring the soldiers home.
The leader assumes the group will follow him tonight.
Into the jungle so that he can stay inside the hut.
His beloved, sheltering, lasting hut.

A few men say no to the man’s assumption.
They planned to go to the southern shore for a bit.
They invited all the others to go, including the leader.
The leader grew frustrated and refused with stinging force.

The group persists upon going the southern shore.
They ask the man why won’t go with them, and try something new.
The leader gives no convincing reason, no legitimate answer, and walks away.
He is angered that they would choose to go when he won’t.

The soldiers grow frustrated with the soldier.
Are they nothing compared to that blessed hut?
The leader continues to believe the hut will protect him forever.
But the hut will surely not stand forever.

The soldiers receive word that the ship has arrived.
They hurry to the shore, and it is there, waiting for them.
They all climb aboard, all except for the leader.
He wants to live in the hut, instead of be with those that will forever love him.

He urges the soldiers to stay with him.
They refuse, wanting to go home and see their families.
The leader glares at them once more and stalks into the jungle.
The soldiers look away as the ship leaves the shore.

They ache over the loss of their dear leader,
But they will not hold him back from his desires.
They have learned to lead their lives the way they want
And no one will change that. Not now, and not ever.
