Description
Speed, speed, speed. Everyone's talking about speed. Speed, schmeed. I'm not crazy about the speed thing myself, but then again I'm not a speed demon either.Did this in a little less than 3 hours. Next time I'll see what I can do in 2.5.
PS. I love you? :/

Are people that obsessed with speed? What if you lose quality because of deadlines?
I believe taking your time is important, so you can show people what youΒ΄re capable of.
Opinions aside, my comment here is just one: WONDERFULL. Quickly done or not, I liked it!

Speed, schmeed - indeed! It's the result that counts, after all. This one's a beauty!

That's a huge compliment to me, and why it took me so long to catch it's embarrassing. You manage more in a couple hours than most people can crank out in a day. And your handling of light is stunning. Thank you, sir!

Liking it a lot! Nothing wrong with speedies as long as it's not done exlusively (some people can't seem to evolve away from them).

It looks good. The fact that this only took you 3 hours is counterweighted by the years you had to practise for this moment... you make it look easy. That doesn't necessarily mean it is...

in my thinking speedpainting is a matter of efficiency not style. Perhaps thats just something i thought up caus im a newbie
Anywho, your work is really awesome, a lot of detail and interestign colours in just three hours, what tools do you use?
Nicely done

I have a pile of crappy paintings. Every time I manage to grow in skills it inevitably results in a stack of bad art. Part of the learning curve. Your stuff rocks, man, keep going!

thanks dude, I'm currently drawing badly proportioned stick men, its like drawing with a left hand. Learning is definatly a time thing!

Oh yes, an a stubbornness-thing. Being a stubborn bastard has gotten me into trouble but it's also the thing that's helped me make it. So I say unto you continue to be stubborn and paint those damn stick men, for they are cool!

Don't think you have to conform the the speed painting sci fi conceptual aesthetic, man. Your traditional oil paintings are far more unique and praiseworthy!
Not that anything you do isn't praiseworthy. Beautiful piece.

I hear ya, Ant! I think speedpaints are good for warming up your drawing hand in the morning, but beyond that there's not enough time to put the love in the art.
Admittedly though, I do have a soft spot for the speedpaints of others, and perhaps that's just an indication of my own level of skill, but I still dig this piece of yours

Yeah, speed painting can turn concepting into a numbers game rather than actual fleshing out an idea. As opposed to one really inspired piece, a handful of quick and distinct (but not necessarily though out) sketches tends to win, since they provide a perceived sense of decision making. Regardless, I really need to get faster too :}

Something new from you, It's nice, I like the color but what realli inspire me is the designs, reminds me of marine creatures. Those whale has some small fishes swim beside them.
But somehow this 3 looks like sharks escort. haha.. and the big one is like orca or beluga...

The thing about speeds is that you don't have time to sift out the tired, stereotypical concepts before they make it onto the canvas... Which is why there are all of these goddamn speedpaint clones. Still, this one is nice

Fyreant In reply to phiq [2010-02-08 02:32:33 +0000 UTC]
You nailed the thing I dislike most about speedpainting. It's a technical exercise. People give it too much importance. The design element of concept art seems to be falling by the wayside in favor of speed, speed, speed.
It does make things easier from a scheduling standpoint. You're no longer trying to nail down an idea. Get your three paintings done a day and you're good.

Amen. I mean, there are galleries filled exclusively with this stuff, and people are happy with that. It reflects in games too, pretty badly.

This has a very different feel and texture from your non-"speed" paintings. Excellent job on the colors, and very tasteful use of subtle grain and texture in the brushwork.
Love you too, babe.
