Description Had a lot of fun drawing him in my previous deviation so I thought I'd give it another try.

Still just as fun.

Teh Hottness Part Two!

My favorite comic char of all time! I never had the balls to draw him! I don't want to taint his perfection! You did a great job!

ha! yes! I was browsing your gallery and just thinking: "Man, it'd be awesome if he drew Nightcrawler!" Lo and behold.

Nice work again and brownie points for the sword.

Brilliant piece as always!

The only critique I can offer is to watch out that those hands and feet don't become too stunted or nondescript. The anatomy on the left hand gripping the saber is a bit flat, and inconsistent with the right hand, which looks really small. Maybe bring some of that awesome shading and sense of where the light source is down to the feet and make them part of the picture as well.

Oh, and PLEASE draw a Colossus!

Thanks.

Your observation is spot on, I must say. My focus was on his face (his is uniquely challenging to draw) and so I devoted most of the detail to the upper region and skimped on the details as I went down. A few tweaks later should take care of that.

Colossus...I'll give definitely give him a try. But all that metal...it'll be a challenge of a different sort.

It's a great drawing technically. The crit I'm gonna give though is that in body language it doesn't look like Nightcrawler. In all my years reading X-Men I don't remember him as posing completely back straight like a human when he was in his demon like form. Even when he has his holo projector watch he doesn't look as confident as he does here. Each superhero has his own mannerisms, and you've got to take that into account when drawing them.

Though I do understand where you're coming from, I do vividly recall issues of Excalibur where he is the dashing swashbuckler and even led the team, not the typical meek Nightcrawler we're used to. So, on that score, I must heartily disagree.

Also, had this been an assignment from Marvel to draw the character for them, I'd take into account the story and his portrayal. This is just for fun and it is presumptuous to assume that I'm trying to render him in any specific fashion. In other words, I can draw him however I want.

I'm not arguing with how you draw him. I quite like it. I love how Jim Lee drew Cyclops, but everyone complained his bulky look didn't match his nickname "slim." So i thought I'd just throw it in in case it'd slipped your mind.

TheOnlyWarman In reply to smygba [2007-04-04 03:00:49 +0000 UTC]

I would disagree with you as well, I mean in the story the Draco nightcrawler really became confident in the demon dimension and it was logical even for him to have this pose during the story while facing off his father and kin and helping his friends. he was really the confident leader type

smygba In reply to TheOnlyWarman [2007-04-12 00:31:36 +0000 UTC]

Well like you say, it made sense in the storyline. In the majority of cases it's not how Nightcrawler is traditionally portrayed. It's also the choice of the person I guess, I just threw it in there because sometimes people neglect these things. For example Rogue was drawn as an adult despite having been a teen in the storyline due to one artists oversight and the mistake continuing it's replication onwards. It's also one of the reasons Cyclops body structure dramatically altered in the mid-90s then altered back when Editors decided to pull the X-Men back 20 years for their movie runs.

i guess it's the flexibility of the edium itself that allows for such alterations to be done without damaging the content much, and commercalization does have a huge impact I mean marvel now probably has an assembly line of artists just to keep em coming so some artists are bound to take liberties and In my humble opinion i think these liberties though sometimes might not make what we call "sense" actually enrichen the medium I mean rogue even though loking as an adult was never looked at as an adult but always as a teen and hey allot of teens I know look a hell lot like adults so it's not that much of a difference. and about cyclops i mean people work out and lose weight its a fact of life it can be applied to xmen as well right ??

Well the look and personality of comics seems more dependent on what the writers/artists related to 20 years earlier when they were kids reading comics.

Comics seem to be on a cyclical path where every other decade the moment shifts back to a style of storytelling or visual look with a few minor tweaks for the decade. Without over simplifying it, fan boys get their dream job, and change comics back how they remember them.

"revolutionize their nostalgia into a new era" - I don't consider much revolutionary, which is why i chose the more derogatary term of saying they make a few tweaks.

I find it really sad most people think they're ultra original and think they're it. the reality is, all these "originals" aren't given the huge catalogue of information in existence, and worse than that, many times it's excuted badly.

I'd much rather have someone saying I'm doing a tried and tested formula and I'm doing it well.

or revolutionize their nostalgia into a new era, never forget those, but yeah in a nutshell I guess you're right, which is why the oldest comics are always (well mostly) the best because these people had nothing to draw from but themselves so they innovated and created comics as we know them now.

well having sooooooooooo much tried and tested formulas I don't think anyone would mind I mean frank miller took stuff from manga (and I mean like complete chars or scene styles check ronin the basket heads are a direct copy from his favourite manga lone wolf and cub) and mixing and matching styles till one finds his own is actually a pretty good way to go. because seriously starting a comic nowadays without at least minimal research would result in a disaster (with some exceptions) even if there is a good plot/art/etc. but I mean everything in the end crunches down to a certain tried and tested way like for example expressionists or cubists nowadays aren't really creating a new thing but following something that started ages ago, so with the others. but I still consider some people to actually have done some decent work, I mean allan moore (an awesome writer if i may add) when working on batman (killing joke to be exact) he really was aiming for the batman in his childhood (and I know that I read an excrept from the actual script of that comic) but still it came out really great and an excellnt canon for the joker's beginings, don rosa did something else although he tried to rework the style of donald and scrooge he always tended to stay honest to carl barks the original creator of the ducks with homages lying left and right in his stories but he really went really far with his work that it is of the few works that is considered canon after the death of carl barks
