Let's just say that Mario's been through a lot and is tired after his adventure (hence the injuries) so he thought Rosalina was Peach. Well, they do look somewhat similar (That's what I thought when I first saw Rosalina, and I'm sure some of you thought that as well) But they do have their differences xD ..I dunno why Rosalina was in the same location as Peach, maybe Bowser finally kidnapped her too?
The moment when Mario finds out he has the wrong princess...

In Mario's defence, Rosalina is far more capable of defending herself and thus means less work. The Comet Observatory took out Bowser's entire air fleet in Galaxy, whereas Peach, while showing reasonable self-defence capacity when Nintendo deems it necessary, employs possibly the worst security force in the entire universe. As to why Bowser sends an army to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom when he could just go it alone, or use a cardboard cut-out of himself and get past the Toads anyway...

I did think they were similar and I could see a mistake maybe the first meeting, but at this point, it is probably a regrettable mistake. Hence Peach's rage of (impending) death towards you know who. :b
