Description
The model is for making HD sprites for a 2D game. I made Scorpion with a bunch of custom moves already, editing old sprites but now I can replace those with these in HD.You can watch him play on youtube.

I love making MK characters, so I'll probably try to make her too.

You've done such a great work with this Scorpion. Looks better than the John Turk sprites, and not just because of the obvious reasons, the HD and higher framerate, there's something just... dunno. Simply made of awesome I only wish he had the hint of the skull in the mask, but I'm guessing you made a sort of generic mask as to share sprites with other ninja characters. It'd still be cool to see some renders with that wicked skull mask

I'm updating the model actually, so the mask with the skull shape is already made.

Man...you should try to show your projects to Netherrealm Studios. Try sending them your links via Twitter or something. They'll be impressed.

Very impressive. If they were going to do a HD remake of UMK3, it wouldn't be a bad idea using 3D animation like this (since it looks quite realistic )

This is awesome as hell.
Also, in a game engine eh?
Hmm, if you mean like, making an actual game, you ever try the unreal engine with an SDK? or the Source engine with an SDK?

I have a bunch of training DVDs for UDK, but I don't really know how to code with it yet. I just started learning C++, so maybe in the future I can make something work in UDK.

I went from 3ds.max to Photoshop, then flash to save the gif as a flash file.

You can think of it like hand drawn animation. Move along the time line every 5,10,20 frames, and create your key poses. Try to keep it clean like that at first, so you don't have a mess of key frames when blocking out your animations.
Later you can move the frames around and scale them in the dope sheet, to smooth it out, but it's kind of like animating a stick figure in a flip book at the start.
You need to learn how to use the curve editor to fix your pose transition and bones flipping. I would try to find a bunch of video tutorials and just see how people do it.
Think about where the power for the movements come from, and the line of balance. Some times, it's better to have less key frames to get a smoother motion.

Looks really good!! Only critique I have is the suit looks spandex. Probably need some bump mapping or something. Keep up the great work!

Also, I think his hands need a bit of animation. Things like extending the fingers and whatnot would give the entire character more....character...but maybe that's just me lol

My only crit on this is that the standing animation seems to have a slow "comeback" phase / looks a little bit robotic.
I am not a lighting expert by any means but 5 omni lights seems to be a bit much.
For global illumination why not just use a skylight?

I added a sky light, but it didn't do anything, I don't know why. I'm having a weird bug now with the lights now, the light is baked on to the model some how and I can't get it off. I don't have any lights in the scene now, and his back is always black no matter how he turns. I'm stuck on how to fix it..., but I'm asking for help at CGTalk, see if they know.

that's the strangest thing I've ever heard of.
In reference to the skylight I was thinking take out all of the omni lights and just use the skylight instead though.

I figured it out, there was an error with the smoothing groups. I had to add an extra edit mesh modifier, use the smoothing groups in there and collapse to.
I don't know why the smoothing groups in the main editable poly modifier were messing up, I've never seen that happen before...

That's awesome!!
Didn't Scorpion have a skull-like mask in UMK3?
I think the hands are a kinda' small.
The animation looks great!!

gabe687 In reply to joselopr [2011-09-08 02:48:06 +0000 UTC]
In the select screen and his ending it looks like different skulls. The sprites you actually play with are all the same mask like the one I made. The mask isn't hard to make though, so I can change pretty easy.
