Description
I felt very honored to be asked to do something for an friendly society (wow! what a nice translation of eingetragener Verein). They do a lot to inform about drugs. I have the impression, that this association doesn't condemn drugs and doesnt glorify them, they help, answer questions and seem to be in touch with the people, they want to help. They do a good job and i liked the idea of what they asked - The society is called "The Alice Projekt", more info here:
www.alice-project.com/
Seriously, when I heard, I could work on a nightmarish version of alice, i got a bit... edgy. I like this weirdo-alice-game for its soundtrack and the settings, but i have troubble imagine how Mr. Caroll would have liked that. I think, Alice is a very sensitive topic and one can get easily distracted by its opportunities. I also would rate this picture not a very good version of Mr. Carolls ideas. I concentrated more on the work of the friendly society, than the novel.
I am not quite finished with this picture and before I send it off, I ask for your critique. Is that picture still understandable?
I am very eager to learn, what there is to improve and what you like.
It' about 70% watercolor + ink and 30% digital.

This is very well done. I like how it is very detailed, not too chaotic, but chaotic enough to get the point across. Pretty twisted too...

The picture is understandable, and it still stands open whether your pro or against drugs. I like the psychdelic-ness of it really It's cool and has association. I like you used different characters, it's also a 'telling' picture somewhat.. I've never read the Alice story but have seen the Disney animation. If I reflect your work upon my memories of the animation I don't think you're work figuratively shows other ideas than Mr.Caroll... Anyway, I support your decision of concentrating on the work of the friendly sociaty than the novel
. It's an understandable choice.
Well, the picture is understandable, though logically I don't know of your intentions here. Say, it's neither black nor white. I think it 'shows' the drug in the psychedelic-ness, Alice and the many forms of seduction it has. I think the skeleton gives it a subtle and nice counter- thing

I have only one suggestion. Because you can't see the catterpiller's face, maybe you can draw it as an reflaction in the shiny bel looking thing he's facing..!?
Nice work anyhow!

Thinking of a fitting attribute, "warped" comes to mind - not in a negative sense though. Highly agreeing on the recommended increasing of contrast as the piece's subjects do tend to blend in parts. I understand though that it's probably quite hard to make them all differentiable while avoiding it to become too... hm... pop-artsy (maybe? XD).
The colour scheme along with the well-known symbolism screams Alice-on-drugs to me, so mission accomplished. Don't think it's overdone in any way... and not *too* confusing either, though I must esp. the left hand bottom corner is a candidate for lots of eye squinting. Does Alice have three hands or is one that of the mad rabbit? Either way I'm not too sure about the girl's anatomy should those legs with the striped stockings be hers. That position would go under "unhealthy" in my books *lol*
So much for my critique. Very good Gab-ish piece *nods*

looking glass, check. queen of hearts, check. cheshire cat, check. catapillar, check. Man, are THOSE some LARGE shrooms, and large catapillar too, very looooooong. mad hatter? cheeeeeeeeeeck. he was kind of hiding underneath the hat, and i didn't recognize him, what with him being well dead and what not. Alice , cheeeeeeeck. hmmm is that rodent, the white rabbit or the march hare? could be march hare since he's near the tea table and all, but i'm still guessing the white rabbit... man is he freaky, did you listen to white rabbit yet? a group called My Morning Jacket also made quite a triiiiiiiiiipped out version of the song, not as good as the original (what rarely is?) but still awesome in its own style. back to the piece, the composition well enough on its own, i would not worry about people understanding it, its quite clear to me, anyway alice's world is suppose to be pretty hectic so its all very befitting. as for improving it.. hmmm, it'd save this version but try out some of Xevv's suggestions. from afar everything kind of blends together, so i'd try defining everything a bit more, more POP.

wow, thanks for the detailed comment : ) well, the mad hatter was not really ment to look like this. I wanted to draw a very well mannered gentleman, but was in automatic mode at this time (somehow like falk below this comment says "manically drawing" ; ) ) I didnt pay a lot of attention to the sketch at this point and regretted it later. But why it turned out to be a comic-skull - i couldnt say. But i like it this way as well.
Yepp, I think Xevv's suggestions are very helpfull and will work a bit more on the contrast and defining everything. Thanks a lot!!

Oh, I play that game; American McGee's Alice? Loved it......
A lot can be said about Caroll and his fixation on Alice Liddell, his bizarre inability to feel comfortable around adults, and his messages. I prefer through the looking glass myself.....
I like this a lot, I like Alice's unsure figure with her big-assed head phones. I might boost up the contrast a bit, and if it were me drawing it, incorporating my own style, I might make everything a bit shinier and add other colors in.

thanks lot!
jepp - i also think, that Mr. Caroll was very interested in substances of some sorts, but i am not quite sure, if he really meant to put it in the book. : )
Thank you very much for the critique. I think, it would do good to work a bit more contrast in the bottom part + thereby defining the blending shapes better. Thanks a lot!
