What about drawing eyes WITHOUT reference. Using reference is easy. It's getting the right proportions and alignment without reference that is difficult. What are your tips on that?

Study real life and photo references so you can memorize it

There's no "standard proportions" that can be learned? If not, then I'll just make my own, but I'd rather not have to redo that work when I can learn from someone else. I'm not going to reinvent calculus when I can just learn it from someone who already knows.
