Description
Claire and Hannah stepped into the streets of the city that they had been transported to and took a look at each other. They were now worlds different….not even human. Claire was tall and golden in color with long hair tied in a sexy pony tail. Her outfit was a lovely silk like dress that was cut near the hip to allow for freedom of movement. It looked like a oriental fabric, and was a golden color. Her skin was a creamish yellow, and her long hair was a deep amber. Embedded in her chest was a round Amber gemstone. Hannah, sported a Chinese style gi of sorts with light greenish skin and a darker green clothing color. Her upper right arm had a green round mere jade stone embedded in it, and her eyes were a brilliant emerald color. They were gems…“Steven Universe.” Hannah growled. “And this must be Beach City…”
“What a goddamned uninspiring name for a town. But what characters are we?” Claire asked.
“We’re our own.” Hannah answered. “In fact, I think our job is to be external characters…new ones.”
“…Good.” Claire started marching down the street, snarling.
“Hold on, Claire! Slow down a moment!” Hannah shouted. “What’re you going to do?”
“Rip this place a new one!” Claire snapped. “This show is ridiculous! It’s a pain in the ass! It’s inconsistent, it’s high on its own stupidity, and arrogantly insufferable!”
“Claire we CANNOT destroy this place.”
“WATCH ME!”
“Our job is to FIX the show.”
“There IS no fixing it, Hannah!” Claire argued. “This show, since season 1, has dug itself in an almost insurmountable hole! The show has no conflict! No dread! No change! Nothing happens! Yes, the characters face enemies sometimes and supernatural threats, but it’s always handled in a deus ex machina fashion which leaves NO lasting affects or conflicts on the characters!”
“Claire, I-”
“And the characters themselves are ridiculous! The gems are irresponsible and pamper Steven to the point that he acts more like a 5 year old than a 15 year old! And Steven himself is uninteresting! He’s the definition of a mary-sue! He suffers nothing, learns nothing, and yet still has all the powers necessary to either save the day, or has the other gems save him instead!”
“CLAIRE!”
“WHAT!?”
“I know all that. I’m not trying to argue!” Hannah pointed out.
“Then what is it?”
“I said we couldn’t destroy this world…we have to fix it. What do you think would FIX Steven as a character?”
“Fix his…character?” Claire asked.
“Right. There’s one way we can fix not only him…but all the other things we despise about this show.” Hannah grinned wickedly.
“…You lost me, Hannah.” Claire sighed.
“Claire…I think it’s time they met…the Gem Hunters.”
Steven and the Crystal Gems had no idea what was making its way through Beach City towards them. Two gems, one gold and the other green marching through the morning mist of the sea through the city. A foolish Ronaldo saw the two coming and, as he stopped to make an annoying comment (as he almost always did), the golden gem, suddenly reached her hand to her hip, as if reaching for a sword. In a single split second moment, she slashed outward. A glowing bright golden katana sword extended from her hand and Ronaldo stood, dumbstruck and open mouthed as a long gash made itself known to him, drawing up from his waist, diagonally across his chest and to his shoulder. Coughing, he fell to the ground with a thud.
“Hmph…pitiful. You waste your energy on this trash.” Jade growled.
“He annoyed me…I don’t like being annoyed.” Amber replied to her partner. Jade grinned and, as they continued, a small boy walked out with an unnaturally shaped face to look like a ripe onion. The eyes of the boy were round and emotionless as they stared up at the two strange women. Jade took one sideways glare at the boy. With a sneer, she reached to her own gem on her arm, and a weapon sprung into her hand, a long ball like mace or Warhammer appeared in her hand. With a halfassed swing, the ball of the hammer struck the boy across the head and sent him crashing into the nearby arcade.
“And you told me I waste energy on trash?”
“That THING was disturbing me.” Jade snapped. She then gave a snide smirk. “Besides…I wanted to see just how far I could fling him.”
“Ha! That thing is probably the most evil creature in the whole damn show.” Amber growled.
“So nothing of value was lost?”
“There’s nothing of true value in this show.” Amber remarked.
“Ironic…considering it’s LITERALLY about gemstones with sentience.”
“Enough!” Amber snapped, noticing the beach just up ahead. “We’ve located the target.” Jade stopped and the two glared towards the surf. There was Steven, the plump little boy laughing and carefree as he played with the giant pink lion next to him.
“What a fool.” Jade hissed. “Is this REALLY the son of Rose Quartz?”
“Supposedly, she’s somehow a PART of him.” Amber rolled her eyes.
“Let’s just hope he’s entertaining.” Jade laughed as she pulled her second Warhammer from her gemstone, wielding two in each hand and marching down the beach towards their quarry.
“I wouldn’t hold my breath.” Amber smirked, sheathing her katana at her hip and following Jade towards the two. The lion looked up and saw the two gems approaching. It got down on its haunches and snarled dangerously. Jade smiled wider.
“Allow me, Amber.”
“Huh?” Steven finally took notice of the two mysterious gems. “More gems!?”
“Correct.” Jade laughed. The lion roared and pounced at the two. With a laugh and a furious swing, Jade slammed the end of her round hammer into the side of it’s maw and the lion let out a yelp of pain as it was thrown across the beach like a rag doll. “Such a cute kitty. Not much of a fighter though…more meow than claw, I guess.”
“Wh-what!? G-GUYS! PEARL! AMETHYST! GARNET!” Steven cried.
“Calling for help…disgraceful.” Amber sneered.
“Don’t be such a spoiled sport, Amber. I wanna see just how tough these three gems are that he’s calling.”
“STEVEN! WHAT’S WRONG!?” Pearl cried. The three gems jumped from the porch of the beach house and ran out to Steven. Upon seeing Amber and Jade, they all looked nothing short of shocked and confused. “Who are you!? What do you want!?”
“The Gem Hunters.” Amber replied. “And by our name…I think it’s clear what we want.”
“Well guess you get to go home empty handed!” Amethyst challenged. From out of her gem she pulled a long whip and lashed it out at the two. Amber and Jade dodged fast and Jade was already smirking. She began twirling her ball hammers rapidly and excitedly.
“Amber, you can have the bitch and the ballerina. I want the one with the afro.” Jade laughed. Jade darted past Pearl and Amethyst and swung her hammer at Garnet. Garnet raised her first, which now sported a pair of massive gauntlets to maximize her power. The club was stopped by her first, but Jade didn’t relent, with a spin of her body she swung the second one upwards and it collided with Garnet’s chin, sending her sprawling backwards.
“AAH!” Garnet cried. “What on earth!?”
“GET UP!” Jade snapped. “Don’t tell me this is all you can do. It’s easy to see you’re the strongest of the three of you…I wanna see how long you can last.”
“What is this, a game to you!?” Garnet demanded.
“No…because a game is fun. This is an experiment…and you’re a lab rat. So squeak for me, rat.” Jade sneered. Garnet, furiously jumped up and began swinging focused and vicious punches. Jade dodged and swerved out of the way, smiling and occasionally swinging back with her hammer.
“Don’t you mock us!” Garnet shouted. Jade laughed in reply. She jumped upwards and swung both hammers down. Garnet jumped back to avoid them, but as the hammers hit the ground, Jade treated them as a vault to launch herself up and kick Garnet hard in the face. As Garnet clutched her shattered shades, revealing her three eyes, Jade, pulled up her hammers again and swung them down on Garnet’s shoulders.
As Garnet fell to her knee in agony, both Amethyst and Pearl surrounded Amber, who had her katana blade out.
“Let’s take her down fast and help Garnet!” Pearl instructed.
“Ha! This’ll be over in 10 seconds!” Amethyst laughed.
“10 seconds?” Amber asked. Amethyst smiled and threw her whip forward to lash at Amber. Amber darted forward and ran straight past Amethyst, dodging the strike. Amethyst turned around angrily.
“You can’t run forever.” She whipped at her again and Amber darted away from it.
“7 seconds.” Amber hissed. Amethyst screamed angrily and jumped into the air throwing her whip forward with tremendous force. Amber dodged away, only to see Pearl appear in front of her, thrusting her spear head at Ambers face. Amber raised her blade and blocked the blow and swerved away from the two.
“4 seconds.” Amber smirked.
“Okay we get it!” Amethyst rolled her eyes. “It’ll take more than that to beat you. You don’t need to rub it-”
“1.”
“AAAAAAAAAH!” Amethyst screamed as her side ripped open in a massive scar that ran up to her gemstone. Instantly her body disappeared, her purple Amethyst gem dropping to the sand with a thunk.
“AMETHYST!?” Pearl cried.
“A bitch with no teeth really shouldn’t bark.”
“Y-you! YOU!” Pearl screamed. She rushed at Amber wildly. The two began exchanging clashes of weapons in a fluid dance of motion and dodging.
“You seem far more eligant than that purple one.”
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER!?”
“I struck her as I ran past her…and she was right. It only took 10 seconds. Guess she’s a better fortune teller than a fighter. But what does that make you? A ballerina? Certainly not a warrior.”
“PEARL!” Garnet cried, climbing to her feet. “Let’s fuse! They can’t beat us as Sardonyx! We have to keep Steven safe!”
“R-right!” Pearl agreed. The two ran towards each other and Garnet instantly began dancing, using her hands to form the motions. Pearl started to join in, when suddenly a ball hammer spun and knocked Garnet off her feet. With a vicious slam, the ball met Garnet’s chest and she coughed loudly as she dissolved into her own gem.
“Hmph…dancing in the middle of a fight. You’re pretty reckless.” Jade growled. “You weren’t nearly as fun as I’d hoped. Way too confident in yourself and reserved. Maybe instead of announcing your plans out loud and allowing yourself to be cornered, you could’ve done better to evade me and help your allies?”
“CURSE YOU!” Pearl cried. She spun to see Steven standing, dumbstruck and unmoving by the unconscious lion. “RUN AWAY STEVEN! GET AS FAR FROM HERE AS Y-AACK!” Pearl gasped in pain as a sword impaled her from behind and she too fell to the ground as a gemstone.
“So loud…” Amber sneered. “A warrior is calm and collected in battle, keeping their emotions and feelings in check. You’re a neurotic nutcase.”
“Good alliteration, Amber.” Jade laughed. They then both glared at Steven who was beside himself in terror.
“P-pearl!? Garnet?! A-Amethyst!? Why!? WHY DID YOU DO THIS!?” He screamed, tears rolling down his face.
“Why?” Jade asked. “What a stupid question.”
“You should be aware of something, kid.” Amber snapped. “There are certain creatures…certain individuals in this universe, for whom the means require no ends.”
“And that’s us.” Jade finished.
“But we didn’t do ANYTHING to you! You had no reason to-” Before he could finish, the tip of Ambers sword found itself inches from his nose.
“Shut up and listen, brat…because we’ve got some words for you to hear. TAKE THEM TO HEART!”
“You lost, Steven. You and the Crystal Gems LOST.” Jade barked. “A cold pill to swallow…one you’re probably not used to swallowing, but there it is!”
“I…I don’t get it…” Steven whimpered.
“You’ve been pampered and spoiled your whole life. You never suffer…you never grow…you never experience anything! Life is pain, kid. You lose things…you suffer…you change. But you’ve been sheltered and doted on so long, you don’t know HOW to improve yourself. You think because you have powers…because you’re the son of Rose that you can do anything, but then it’s always your guardian angels, the Gems who save you from danger!” Amber snarled.
“Even when conflict comes, you get through it without so much as a scar, thinking you’re succeeding on your own power, when really it’s poor writing, dues ex machina bullshit, or the gems saving you last minute. The reason we came here is to begin your change…or die.”
“My change? What’re you talking about? You killed my friends so that I’d CHANGE?!”
“Calm down, they aren’t dead.” Jade rolled her eyes. “We just wanted to give you a taste…a small bite of what’s to come, Steven.”
“Your pampered days are done. It’s time to grow the hell up! Suffer. Endure. Grow. Adapt. Change. You gain nothing by being a needy little boy who cries and yells when he doesn’t get his way.” The weapons of the two gems disappeared and they both turned to leave. Steven watched them go and then stood up again, yelling after them.
“DON’T EVER COME BACK!”
“If you hate us that much…then kill us next time, Steven.” Jade snickered.
“N-next time?!” Steven gulped.
“Oh we’ll meet again.” Amber assured him. “And next time be ready for a real challenge…you and your precious caretakers. I’d start preparing if I were you.”
“After all…you’re not our real enemy.” Jade pointed out. “There’s something far worse than you or us that haunts this universe…a force so toxic and destructive, it must be stopped, or everything salvageable about you or this world will be lost.”
“What enemy is that?”
“…The fandom.” Amber hissed.
“Beware the fandom kid…beware the goddamn fandom.”
“….Fuck the fandom.” Amber added harshly as a large portal opened before them. Steven had to rub his eyes in awe as the two gems walked casually through it, but not before shooting a glance back at him with smirks on their faces. Steven knew, even as they disappeared from sight…that he hadn’t seen the last of Jade and Amber.
“Ya know, Amber…er…Claire…” Jade, now calling herself Hannah again smiled. “That was a good adventure.”
“Oh yes, I do agree, Hannah.”
“….We’re gonna get SOOOO much hate for this.”
“I know.” Claire shrugged.
“….It was so worth it.”
“That it was, Hannah….that it was.”

There was a time I liked this show. I don't anymore. After the start of season three, everything started falling apart. The characters lost any personality they had developed, and they started introducing too many new ones instead. It was unfortunate, but not entirely unsurprising.

Well, I couldn't get past season 2. I really tried, but the first season was horrible to me, and while the second one introduced some ideas I was happy about, it didn't pursue them the way I thought they would.
As I said in the picture description, my biggest problem with Steven Universe was always the lack of evolution or change in Stevens character. The show is under the impression that sad backstories, emotional moments, and songs are enough for character growth...but that isn't the case. Good stories use backstories to establish character motive and connection with the viewer on an emotional level, but then show them overcoming their conflicts and difficulties while we maintain the emotional connection.
See, Steven Universe made us feel for the characters....and then made the characters do nothing. They never face any struggles they can't beat. Steven always finds a way to get out of trouble, always gains a new power without earning it, and always gets saved. Nothing ever changes...nothing grows or is lost. Anything he loses he regains and he gets pampered. To me, this is the ultimate WEAK character. That's why I created Jade and Amber. They serve as foils to Steven. They are stronger than the Crystal Gems and know it. Steven has to get stronger to fight them, and when he learns what they're REALLY after....it's going to DEFINITELY have an affect on him.
I WANT STEVEN UNIVERSE TO REACH ITS POTENTIAL. But that will never happen if the writing staff doesn't push Steven to a new level of character growth.

Agreed! A pair of POWERFUL antagonists (who aren’t truly antagonists, as you’ll learn later), and some honest real conflict!

How did I not guess this when you said ukulele. I remember watching this show right up to when Jasper got corrupted and then stopping. Nice to see you ripping my primary school years to shreds 1 piece at a time. Nicer to see how fast this was uploaded.
Looking back, this show really needed this beating. Really looking forward to the next one, and I guess I better be ready for anything.
