Part 1-5: Cheap Knockoffs of Shadow Puppets

By the time the Jigglypuff and the Mawile stepped out of the Awesome Space Teepee, the sun had just sunk down below the horizon. "L—let's hurry," Amy said to Ryoshi, clinging to his arm. "If we can make it back sooner, then we don't have to worry about ghosts or my family worrying about me or—"

Her eyes then widened in horror as she saw a pitch-black figure rise up from where their shadows would be if the sun was still visible. Its sharp red eyes were the only things that pierced the blackness. And it was clearly rearing back to attack the Mawile.

"RYOSHI, LOOK OUT!" she shouted, pushing him out of the way by reflex. Unfortunately, she wasn't fast enough to also be able to dodge the evil shadow's attack, and it swiftly tied itself around her like a snake, but far more nimble.

Ryoshi fell on his back from the force of the shove. He quickly sat back up, rubbing his head before realizing that she had actually shoved him out of the way of some inky-black mass with eerie, piercing red eyes.

What the heck was that thing...?! Whatever it was, there was no time to try and figure it out; it was attacking Amy!

"G—GET OFF OF HER!" he bellowed at the creature, grabbing what looked to be its neck before ripping it off the Jigglypuff and smashing it to the ground.

He leapt on top of it and reared back a fist coated with the energy of a Focus Blast. At least, until... he actually got to look at it. The creature, whatever the heck it was... It looked like a shadowy version of him! Sure, he couldn't see any features, but he could tell it had his exact body-structure, and those beady red eyes were shaped just like his.

"W—What... What are you...?" Ryoshi muttered with a shaky voice.

The shadow creature said nothing, but opened up a wicked, toothy grin before morphing his arm out of Ryoshi's grip and delivering an uppercut to Ryoshi's chin.

"HEY! LEAVE HIM ALONE—!"

Amy tried to rush on over to help Ryoshi, but then something tripped her and felt as though it was trying to reel her in. She turned to see what it was, and to her horror, it was another of those shadowy things that were attacking Ryoshi, except this one was more of her shape with much bigger red eyes. In fact, the exact glow of the red eyes reminded her of the shadowy creatures from the Labyrinth last summer...

"AAAH! How did you GET here!? GO AWAY!"

Unfortunately, the sound waves passed through the shadowy Jigglypuff figure like it wasn't even there.

Even though in the back of her mind, she was worried that these things were the equivalent of Dark/Ghost-types, she still lashed out with a Mega Kick using her one free leg just to try to get it off of her. Not only did that not have any effect either, but it only reacted by yanking her up and slamming her face-down into the ground.

"Ooow...Mmph!" How about Psychic this time?

Still nothing. It was like it wasn't even there for her to grasp on! This was really, really bad. She wasn't entirely sure how Ryoshi was doing, but given what she knew of his moveset, only Knock Off might have had any effect on these monsters. At least he was doing better than her, but would he even be able to help? And if only she had that crystal from the Labyrinth to help her now...!

Ryoshi struggled to fight against his own shadow beast. Not only was this thing decent at hand-to-hand combat, but to Ryoshi's shock and annoyance, none of his moves other than Knock Off seemed to even bother these things. Did that mean these shadow imps were Ghost-types or something?

Whatever the case was, he was being forced into a mono-a-mono duel with this thing, exchanging all manner of punches, kicks, and whatever default fighting maneuvers the two mustered up.

And then suddenly...

"Hey, Mr. Cheap Knockoffs of a Bunch of Shadow Puppets! Say 'cheese!'"

A certain goofy-yet-serious Clefable suddenly appeared while carrying the familiar Chargestone. He waggled his finger, and suddenly, a bright flash of light burst from it, illuminating and temporarily blinding everyone in the area. The shadow monsters screamed and seemed to dissipate while Jukidoor grabbed Amy and Ryoshi, carried them under both of his arms, and started to run. They couldn't see that he had also conjured up a stuffed plushie version of himself and left it there to distract whatever of the evil entities remained.

Amy was tempted to argue out why Jukidoor's Metronome had to pick a move that blinded her too, but at the same time, she couldn't deny the fact that her dad seemed to be getting them out of the trouble. As long as those creepy shadow imitation monsters didn't chase them, that was all that mattered.

---------------

It wasn't until the three of them had arrived at what looked like a cave in some sort of mountain on the edge of town that Amy's eyes finally cleared up. Jukidoor had placed her and Ryoshi around the Chargstone he brought along with him, and sat down.

"Amy? Ryoshi? You two okay?" he asked.

"Y—yeah..." Amy replied, shivering. "I mean, I heard of people being attacked by evil spirits at night lately, but I never thought that they would be like those guys I fought at the Trial of Wisdom! And looking like us, too! Creepy!"

"I'm fine..." The Mawile rubbed his eyes until his vision returned, albeit spotty at first, but he eventually managed to get his sight back to normal. He snuggled up next to Amy, bringing her into his hold in an attempt to calm and comfort her.

"Thanks for saving us, Jukidoor. We owe you one." He rubbed the back of his head. "But what was with those imps? Those were the things you had to fight in the Labyrinth, Amy? I have some new respect for your fighting skills... Those are annoying..." Ryoshi let out a sigh. "I really need to get moves that hit ghosts."

"Urgh, me too. Of course, I had a crystal with me at the time, too..." But then she calmed down, and smiled, hugged Ryoshi back and nuzzling him for a bit.

"I think I have some idea what they are," said Jukidoor. "From what I've been able to hear, everyone else who was attacked had the same experiences you did, with their shadow suddenly moving, looking like them, and attacking them...I know several ghost guys who can do that. Gengar, Haunter, Shuppet...in fact, I think all ghosts can do it. And it's also entirely possible that it was either a Sableye or Spiritomb who attacked you, Amy. I mean, I'm just guessing, but either you never used Psychic or you did and it didn't work. Am I right?"

She nodded. "Probably one of those jerks. So what do we do?" she asked before coughing. Ugh, it was bad enough having to fight off these creepoes, but to do it while they were all sick? It was a wonder Jukidoor could run as fast as he could. "Not to mention we have to do something about this crud...I wonder if it's those monsters that are causing this."

"Probably." He made a face before coughing and shivering. "For all we know, they could be draining our life forces in order to create physical forms for them to inhabit this world again, and maybe the more formed they become, the worse we feel. So we have to defeat them before they completely drain our energy, or else—WHOOOOOAAAAAA—"

In an almost comical if it weren't so frightening manner, Jukidoor was dragged out of the cave by a shadowy figure that ended up looking just like him.

"DAD!" shouted Amy, trying to go after him, but then being stopped by the shadow being that looked like herself.

And just like that, Ryoshi's shadow shot up from behind him too, wrapping around him like a serpent.

"Ugh, not you again... I'm getting rather tired of you!" Ryoshi grunted. The Mawile threw a punch back at the shadow's face looming over his shoulder, only to have it dissipate, reform around his arm, and throw him to the floor. He sprung back up quickly and made a move to smash the form against him and the cave's walls, only for the mass to jump off at the last second and leave Ryoshi crashing into the rock.

"I have HAD IT with you!" Ryoshi roared. The Mawile sent a Focus Blast-empowered punch into the shadow's jaw, and this one actually hit! The shade fell back on the ground and all at once began to sizzle and scream.

Ryoshi's shadow leapt back into the floor, leaving behind the Chargestone where it had landed. Of course! They were shadows, so the light could harm them! The Mawile clambered to grab the crystal before finding Amy again.

"Amy, catch!" He flung the stone at her just as his shadow reformed around him and dragged him back against the ground.

"What...?"

Though she had done no better against her shadow than last time, with it pinning her to the floor, she saw how Ryoshi's shadow reacted thanks to the Chargestone. Of course! It was like that crystal she used in the Labyrinth! Finally, at last, it seemed that the crazy shiny Absol's insistence that they go through some silly Trial of Wisdom was coming in handy for once. He probably saw this far ahead!

Any ordinary onlooker (or even Ryoshi himself) would probably wonder how the Mawile even expected the Jigglypuff to be able to catch the Chargestone if both her arms were pinned to the ground, but not Amy herself. Without hesitation, she caught the Chargestone with Psychic and plunged it into one of the big red eyes of her shadow, causing it to scream and dissipate into the floor. But before it could escape completely, she stabbed at it a few more times, weakening it considerably.

She didn't stop there, though; she immediately turned around and did the same for Ryoshi's shadow. It went down even faster since it had fallen on the very Chargestone previously.

And then there was Jukidoor. He had just run into the cave, trying to crack a ton of jokes with his shadow in an attempt to get it to laugh and stop attacking, but it wasn't working. Luckily for him, Amy had sent the Chargestone sailing into the shadow and stabbed it several more times to get the considerably larger mass to disappear completely.

When it was all over, she brought the Chargestone back to her arms and held it out in front of her, panting heavily. She looked all around the cavern, just to make sure no other shadows remained.

"Y...you guys okay?" She then coughed a few times, trying to clear her throat. "Ryoshi? Dad?"

"Y—Yeah…thanks to you." Ryoshi coughed and gasped for breath. Battling was not a good idea when his lungs were in such cruddy condition. "I'm…glad you knew how to deal with those stupid things, Amy dear. Haha, I guess we've finally found the one aspect of batting that you're batter at than me... And what great timing, too." He let out a harsh cough. "Either way, I hope we don't have to fight those things ever again."

The Jigglypuff rushed over to him and patted his back. "Well, even if we do, at least we know how to deal with them."

"Hey, don't forget about me, Amy!" Even when sick, Jukidoor could still laugh, albeit weakly. "I have to admit, that was pretty cool, what you did. And with any luck, we should hopefully get better."

Amy nodded. "I hope so too."

Then they heard an unfamiliar voice that made them freeze up.

"Ah...I believe the true cause of your conditions is...much more complicated than that. But at any rate, we must congratulate the three of you for defeating your shadows."

It was coming from deeper within the cavern. Amy held up the Chargestone. "What the—who are you!? Show yourself!"

She make the Chargestone levitate with Psychic and go on over to where the voice was coming from, and in an instant, it illuminated a Duskull and a Litwick.

People she didn't even recognize. She tilted her head and stared at them in confusion, as well as suspicious annoyance.

"...Who are YOU guys supposed to be?"

 *Amy-the-Jigglypuff 's comments:

Hahaha, I suppose we *could* have done stuff with the shadow enemies like "have them point out the dark sides of the characters" and blah blah blah blah blah, but personally, I felt as though making them act like those Ing-like creatures in the Labyrinth in Mission 1 was definitely scary enough, as well as the whole "WTH???" factor alone. I mean, seriously! This mission has your characters fight their SHADOWS! It's as wacko as your water bottle suddenly sprouting a face one day and chatting with you. XD Well, okay, so maybe it is more related to ghosts than that, but you knooooooow.

But yeah, Part 2 of Mission 2 won't be released until this Friday, unless some other delay comes up, so just sit tight until then!

 =ChicoChikorita 's Comments:

Aw yeah, finally getting to the exciting stuff.
As the two step out of the teepee,  they are suddenly get attacked by... Their shadows? What the heck?! Jukidoor saves them and they escape to a cave only... to be attacked by the shadows again? These things are persistent! What's with these things? And those ghosts? Well, things can't get more difficult... Right?

Prose by both of us!
Art by *Amy-the-Jigglypuff , unless otherwise specified.

I guess that's a unique take on "shadow monsters" and whatnot. To be honest, I thought the shadows would be more like the Shadow Sneak move, but this works too.

Still, great work!
