What is Autism (AS) [link]
"People have just been constantly saying it does make you stupid, and it has been bothering me to no end." -Narwhalperson
Geeze people.
Technically the autistic are smarter than we are. They may simply suffer from (one or more of the following, but not necessarily all) difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
I've met 2 people with Asperger's Syndrome (one is an old family friend's son, and the other I work with). Yes, they may be annoying to you and I on a social level, but these people are brilliantly smart.
Of the two I've met, one aspires to be an accountant and is great at quick work math. The other speaks Latin fluently and studied to be a clergy man and now aspires to be a lawyer.
They're social skills are simply lacking the decorum we as "normals" deem acceptably comfortable.
But they are not stupid. Far from.
" Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. About 40 percent have average to above average intellectual abilities." -AS
--About the emote
I haven't met many people with autism. In fact the only (noticeable) ones I seem to ever meet are the ones with Asperger's.
So the emote has Asperger's.
But then the emote as a brilliant idea at the end, symbolizing the intelligence they actually harbor.

Going by their logic, Albert Entstein, Bill Gates, Jerry Seinfeld, Mozart and the creator of Pokemon were all stupid.
And this is my reaction to their logic:

What-? Where are you pulling that from? Tracing back the etymology is still never gets to "not sexually developed", instead first appearing as a term for schizophrenia and a "tendency towards the self [mind]".
> >Autism's etymology (auto and -ism = a tendency towards the self) describes the social impairment symptoms - the relative lack of social engagement, or at least of social and emotional cognition - among people on the spectrum. Sure it overlooks the other symptoms, but so what?
Words change meanings, and "autism" no longer means "a tendency towards the self" or "a symptom of schizophrenia" or "morbid self-absorption" any more, even though the term may have had those meanings a hundred years ago. < <
> >
early 20th century (originally with reference to a condition in which fantasy dominates over reality, regarded as a symptom of schizophrenia and other disorders): from Greek autos βselfβ + -ism . < <
I still don't understand the reference to the second part. Is the capital 'Y' an emphasis marker or just a typo? Are you trying to be insulting or are you simply under-educated about autism?

I support this stamp however AutismSpeaks [[I dont know if you still support this organisation or not]] is actually a horrible thing that actually treat Autism as a disease rather than an actual disability.Β
Very little cash goes towards families who have a family member [[Mostly a child]] and use most of their money to find a cure for autism.

I'm on the spectrum, and a lot of people say I'm really smart, but in all honestly, I lack common sense. I may have a knack for working with computers, I may have a decent command of the English language, and I may be able to memorize oodles of useless trivia, but I lack street smarts. I'm also overly emotional, and I have trouble with math. If I were able to have all of the advantages of my condition with none of the disadvantages, I would probably be a filthy rich venture capitalist by now, or at least I would have my own place and not be living in a friend's basement.
People also tell me that I lack self esteem... they're right about that. I'm a realist though, and I know I'm a dysfunctional human being. I'd be lying if I said my condition had nothing to do with it, but it's complicated. There are tons of "neurotypicals" out there who are just as messed-up as I am though, so I really think it has more to do with the circumstances of my life, and how I was brought up. I want to succeed in life though, so I'm planning on going back to school soon so that I can work towards an IT diploma. As the old adage goes, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade". Of course, I'm gonna need some sugar and water as well, otherwise my lemonade is going to taste awful.

It's actually the contrary: autism makes us SMARTER than other people. We think outside the box, which can lead to some very amazing things (I still wish I was the kind of autistic where I could calculate every math problem ever made XD)

you could also say you're autistic, because while you're more than your diagnosis, you wouldn't be you without autism

I'm an Aspie. I hate being treated like I'm a stupid baby that can't do anything. I was once shown how to print when I already knew how to do it! I got yelled at to for drawing all the time. God, People these days don't understand.
I'm grateful to be an Aspie. It makes me different in a good way. My drawings are really good too! ^^

tsk. Never dumb yourself down. Excel and make them jealous As they say "if you've got it, flaunt it". Dumbing yourself down doesn't help anyone in the long run and will only make you regret time wasted trying to make others happy.

Aaaabsolutely. When I was in 3rd grade, I showed my mother an article about autism and said, "That sounds like me," because I knew I was different, I was struggling with thing other kids didn't. She told me I didn't have it, I was smart.
Wellllll, now I'm twelve and diagnosed.
One of my friends talks in a slow voice around me now, and when I do something different, she tells me it's a non-autism thing, like I'm not even human or worth including anymore.
People really need to stop equating Asperger's/autism with stupidity. Or at least bother to know more about it than, "I know you have it!" before they judge you.

Yo! I gots teh Asperger's
I don't know anyone with full-blown autism either. And "Rain Man" style autism is not ... ah, accurate. Well, someone who is like that probably exists (Tom Cruise's brother! lol) but I'm terrible at math, but highly skilled in English grammar, history, and of course pointing out other peoples' flaws and hypocrisy
I used to be annoying, SUPER annoying, but then I grew up , and I have friends who like me for my brutal honesty and randomness.. randomness that in reality is just my brain connecting two seemingly unrelated subjects with a thin line of logic that no one else can see
I talk a lot, and we talk a lot since social cues and relationships aren't natural to us. We talk because we love to talk about what we love But the whole "back and forth" thing is kind of ... weird.. Ah, to me it's kind of jarring, or crooked... jagged.. awkward... somet word that describes being bent out of shape and not streamlined or straightforward.
I also feel really bad when I notice that people aren't listening to me, so that's why I talk really fast and move my hands around as much as possible so 1) they'll pay attention to what I'm saying, and 2) I'll get everything out of the way as quickly as possible before they decide to tune out .. (hey she's waving her hands around, this must be a very interesting topic. Let's listen O_O )

Ugh, thank you.
I have autism so one of my younger brothers had told me that when they were up at my father's house, his new wife who doesn't like me for reasons I have yet to know, asked my brothers if I was able to use a microwave or do anything like regular people since she knew I have autism. The actual hell....
The answer to that question should be obvious since I wouldn't be using this laptop of mine right now or cooking my own food otherwise. I have to feed myself somehow, damn it... I do dislike the fact I suck at communicating with people. >A> I'm trying to get over that but it's so hard....
For every person I hear say that they don't think an autistic person is smart, I want to kick them so hard. Especially my dad's new wife. >.> Sorry if this comment sounds weird. I typed it up when I had no sleep last night. >w>
