And now at last, we have the answer to the age-old question of why there never seems to be enough clothes to cover the evil duplicate and the original.

You're welcome.

Sshh. Never ask silly logical questions like that, or you could invoke the wrath of The Writer, and be bumped off in the next scene.

I never thought of it that way, but you're right - there's two of them in that scene. The human doesn't have a chance!

...I forgot to mention that I love the slightly "chibi" style of this cartoon (with the small bodies and oversize heads). It works well for the light-comedy mood of the piece.

What can I say? I loves drawing da' cartoons. (Though I might be accused of liking this particular subject a little too much).

Yep, it's a guy thing.

Of course, the inspiration for this piece was the classic episode "What are Little Girls Made of?" in which Dr. Corby uses the alien artifact to make an android replica of Captain Kirk. Kirk was put into the machine butt-naked (because of anatomical differences, my machine covers a bit more than the original) and a humanoid form was thrown in the other side. A few twists and turns and viola! An evil android Captain Kirk (also butt-naked). From then on, the evil android was seen wearing Kirk's uniform while Kirk was forced to wear a jumpsuit. I suspect that this was done so viewers could tell who was good and who was evil, but for some reason Nurse Chapel and the android Andrea couldn't figure that little detail out.

Well, that's enough geekiness for the day.

I recently saw that episode and read the novelization!

However, I am a Next Generation fan and a fan of that show's most famous evil twin android

I'm a great fan of Brent Spiner's work. I hope to see a lot more from that talented actor.

My personal fav of the franchise is DS9 - a little darker and a lot messier than the standard ST fare. Enterprise was ok, but don't get me started on Voyager.

Oh yeah, I'm saving up to buy Threshold on DVD Too bad they canceled it.

My father's the Original Series fan and an even bigger Trekkie than I am. He only watches Voyager to ogle Seven.

At any rate, before we got off on that tangent, I wanted to say how it reminded me of another Star Trek episode, one of my favorites, where the evil android twin replaces the real bridge officer--"Datalore." That episode as a bonus had both Picard and Beverly yelling "Shut up, Wesley! "

Poor Data - people were always turning him off or taking pieces off of him (brrrr!)

On the Star Trek pinball machine, Data will say something obvious such as "Had you propelled the ball on the proper trajectory, you would have been rewarded." Astute players know that by hitting both flipper buttons you can get Picard to interrupt him by saying "Thank you, Mr. Data."

And bringing us full-circle to the Old Series, when Dr. Corby was copying Kirk's memories for the android, Kirk kept repeating "Shut up, Spock, I'm tired of your half-breed interference!"

You'd think that an inventor who could create a realistic humanlike android would have known better than to stick a giant off switch in the middle of his back. But it serves a much higher purpose--plot development!

...Now I want that pinball machine. I'm very good at pinball.

Ah, I remember that. It was Kirk's attempt to give Spock a clue that something was wrong

Hey, if I'm building a very strong, autonomous android, I'm sure as hell going to be putting in a kill switch and it's going to be someplace not too obvious but still easy to reach.

You're welcome to come visit to give it a try. It's not very portable (in fact I think it's one of the heaviest machines Williams made.)

I was young at the time and even I knew that Kirk was saying that to give Spock a coded message.

Hey, if I'm building a very strong, autonomous android, and planning to put in a kill switch, I'd make a remote control.

I'd love to visit, but you'd have to pay for airfare from California. Hell, I don't care if you stuff me in an overhead luggage bag

Well, when I was young, my father and I were fascinated by Deep Space Nine and Voyager. I only started watching TOS when I discovered Hulu.

Gamecreature In reply to MasterPlanner [2010-02-02 00:34:31 +0000 UTC]

FYI, all of the 'bots on Battlebots were remote controlled and the rules stipulated that you could not compete unless the bot had a manual kill switch.

Guess it'll have to wait then - I can barely afford to get myself around much less anyone else.

I grew up on TOS and weighed in on the mighty OS vs. NG debates. I'm partial to the current generation but my first thought after watching the Abrams movie was "Kirk's back, baby!"

MasterPlanner In reply to Gamecreature [2010-02-02 00:59:31 +0000 UTC]

Ah. I shall file away that fact for later reference. Just in case I should need to bring that up in any future conversation.

This economy is hard on everyone, I suppose.

My father and I have argued many a time over that eternal issue, landing on opposite sides of the coin. (TNG ftw!) He never misses an opportunity to point out that the OS has "Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Scotty--and your favorite series has a robot, a Klingon, a kid, and an engineer with a barrette comb on his head!"

I always find those Star Trek arguments silly. To me, it's kind of like saying "you have to choose between choclate and ice cream - you can't like both." For heaven's sake, Next Gen gave Trekkers what they were dreaming for: new Star Trek every week! What's not to like about that?
