Description
Finally I have a new piece of work to show you guys! This is the most complicated composition I have created, dynamically and in respect to color as well. Its a bit bombastic but that is how I roll. Still sharpening the old stick so I'll be able to hunt big jobs. This picture took about a week to complete. I don't watch Naruto, so in order to ensure I respected the show, and understood what I was drawing, I watched 50+ episodes, 30 of which were in a row. Immediate proceeding the 30th episode, I listened to some Japanese music and ate ramen so I could express my burgeoning weeaboo nature. Guy Sensei called me on the phone and let me know how big of a bad ass I was for drawing him like the bad ass he is. Our bad ass natures collided through telecommunations so hard my cellphone exploded. You guys owe me a cellphone.Related content

Easily the best Naruto picture on DA to date, and I can't see anyone making a better one. Unless they can further capture Guy Sensi's bad assery, but I highly doubt that's possible without exploding one's computer/pencil and paper/whatever media used to create said picture. I'd applaud this monument of awesome-tude, but it'd be kinda pointless because the sound wouldn't reach you. So I'll just add it as a fav.

This picture is amazing. Lee happens to be my favorite character from Naruto, but that's not why I love this picture. Gai Sensei looks awesome, you really did a good job with him. I don't know what medium you used (looks like a paint job in photoshop, or maybe watercolors), but you did an awesome job.

I could rant and rave about how awesome this picture is, but what can I say that hasn't already been said in the past four pages? Even if I wasn't a Naruto fan (something I like to claim less since the fan hordes started watching it on Cartoon Network,) I'd still love the drawing and coloring itself.
But there's one thing I'd like to know, and in the spirit of post bad-assery plot exposition you should be glad to explain: Your process. I don't need a ton of details, I'd just like to know what program you used, I'm guessing Photoshop, and how many layers you used. Are we talking like one per character or what? And of course, any other details you care to share would be great. Also being a person who strives to be a proffesional, I like to learn where ever I can, and this picture clearly has much to teach. I could use my Sharingan eye of course, but it still helps to hear tips on secret techniques straight from their users.

Hey, thanks a lot for expressin' interest! This is an extremely abridged explanation of how it was done, cuz I do some things automatically and can't remember. For this one in particular I used a new method i was experimenting with. I rendered the whole picture in grayscale, onto the white background, with the round brush fairly loosely, so you can see all those crap shapes. I went back over the whole picture with the overlay and soft light BRUSH (not the layer setting) to colorize it, again very loosely. At this stage you should have an overly vibrant color tornado. You then use the color sample tool to pick out colors that work (hold the alt key and click to pick up colors) and render them into the picture using the round brush as one normally would. The more random colors you pick up, the better! It makes it look like you know what you are doing. Those soft light and overlay brushes only can create highly saturated colors, so you'll have to select your own darker or more dull colors at times. Keep drawing until you win.
This is all on one white filled layer.
1. Grayscale rendering
2. Soft Light/Overlay brush color vomit
3. Sample good colors and render them in a way most fitting of awesome with a normal brush
4. Win (this part is important)
This method will give you a very vibrant looking picture, and may not be the best method for certain pieces. It does what it does well tho'!

Wow, I never would have guessed that was how you did it. I've heard of techniques that start with greyscale before, but I kinda forgot about them. Still, the part about making a big mess than sampling the good colors frequently and laying those down is pretty similar to my most recent technique, though I just start out with throwing colors down.
I do have a few questions, though: First, when you say soft light/overlay for the brush setting, you mean just one or the other right? Or is there a way to apply multiple settings like that at once that I somehow missed? Second, if I understand correctly, your technique results in you coloring every part at least twice, right? (Same goes for my technique.) And finally, did you use any brush settings like size or transperancy dynamics?
Thank you very much for the info, it always helps to hear tips from a skilled artist.

Nah, just use either overlay OR soft light. They interact with dark colors differently. And yep, you will have to color it twice pretty much. The brushes are default (100% flow, 100% opacity).

The smooth colouring and the way you have everything juxtaposed...I just can't find any words >.<

LMAO! That description almost rivals the piece in terms of fucking AWESOME. Sorry about your cellphone. Gai-sensei should have been more considerate, seeing as you probably drew him ten times more awesome than anyone else EVER has!
I'm a big Rock Lee fan, myself and he look fantastic!! And Sakura looks very pretty. I like this very much
