Description This picture was an experiment in producing a quick and readable background. For the most part it was all hand drawn, except for the tiles which I used some editing to paste to the floor. I also duped some sections and repainted over them to speed up the process. For one of the more complex BGs I have drawn it was relatively quick. I am still tryin' to feed the speed to my art and pick up the pace. Craig Mullins, I'm'a comin' for ya son. DAYTONAAAAAAAAAA!

perspective and lighting are top notch

perhaps, if you're willing to sink more time into such a piece, you can make it in photoshop at a high multiple of the final resolution, spending time adding in details at the 100% level before reducing it to the final 25% or so.

you don't cease to amaze do you? i'm curious first to know what qualifies as a speed paint to you, since most artists have their own definitions

but regardless this is amazing, and when in icon mode, it looks like a photo! the pattern on the floor draws you eyes in... and the lights in the room (at least in my case) keep my eyes centered and looking forward, as if i was a straggler in their group and had fallen behind... though i can only imagine that i had fallen behind since i was distracted by the statues along each of the walls by the doorframe

the hard light cast down upon them gives them a mysterious, ominous, and overall powerful feel to them!

you mastered the composition here too so that any piece of this picture could stand on it's own! i love this so much! the varying lights make it all the more interesting, though i am curious... you said you pasted the floor on to save time, but did you previously make the tiles? or were they just a reference that you used?

One idea I've been playing with is collecting various angles of walls and curved surfaces. Various textures, bumps, spikes, thread etc. The extremes and mediums of all basic shapes and textures. This basic archive is only a few GB and contains templates for all that I do.

I love the idea of high-detail quality speed painting. Very nice! I strongly believe that an ultimate Digital Artist could perfectly piece together any image in their mind in five minutes or less. In my personal attempt, I do a lot of stock image collecting and playing in photoshop with rotating and filter laying and using 3d objects in ways they were not intended. Like a big rock could be CG'd into anything, it already has texture and just needs to be formed and stretched about. Anything can become anything else in little to no time. I'm not great at CG, and I never use stock art in my own gallery but maybe in the future I'll be proud of my art enough to give it a shot.

Let me know if you write any articles about the science of speed drawing.

I'm trying to write my own but it's a sloppy process. It's all so experimental!
