Without further ado, with the permission of ajr24c , I now present you Crystal’s guidance.

Crystal’s guidance

Shopping used to be one of her favorite hobbies until the accident.

The 18 wheeler slammed into the passenger side without any warning. The driver was surprisingly unscaved yet Gemini bore the brunt of the injuries.

This might be why people say that smoking is hazardous to health. Her arms were outside the window throwing out her cigarette butt. Her right arm was the first to give way. First goes her radius and ulna. Then her metacarpals get crushed before her right leg was caught in the wreckage. The proximal femur, distal femur, patella, medial tibial condyle, all crushed with the immense pressure. Her tibia and fibula were shattered in 8 places. Finally the symphony of crackle came to an end with the final notes that came from her cracked talus, navicular and cuboid.

Her limbs in the X-ray were almost unrecognisable.

The damage to the nerves was hard to assess because of all the injuries. To be quite clear, her right limbs are completely destroyed. It would be a miracle if they would ever have any sensations other than pain. If she was lucky.

The doctor wanted to amputate but Gemini begged and pleaded. She only wanted the doctor to do their best to save her limbs. She just wants to be whole. She doesn’t want to become a cripple.

The prognosis is not good. Her limbs are not responding to the numerous surgeries. They are non-union.

Gemini has to face the real possibility of the complete amputation of her right arm and leg. She didn’t know what to expect and so she looked up a friend, Crystal, who has been an amputee for ages.

As they walk along the streets, Gemini is still in no mood to shop.

Gemini looked down on her battered body. “What is to become of me?”

“Make the choice. Don’t dwell on what you could have but think of the freedom of what you will be getting!”

Looking at the back of Crystal as she continues to crutch down the street, Gemini ponders on being whole and being free. She looks at Crystal’s stumps where her leg used to be and looks back at her limbs.

She chooses freedom.
