So my explanation is that Eli ended up holding them up with his inane excuses and forgetting things and they ended up getting in in the afternoon. Despite the fact that the sun was going down, Keith still wanted to get used to the city before the, erm, "festivities" began, so they end up walking around until it gets dark without realizing.
