This I will say--out of all the countless poor decisions in George Lucas' tenure,Β  making Luke & Leia as siblings was 2ndΒ  worst, memorable decision ever made!Β  The 1st worst decision was cheating Han's sacrifice. Even as a kid, I felt Han should've been killed in Empire. His death could've made a cinematic impact in the saga & Harrison Ford knew it--he went on record to admit that fault.

There's nothing wrong with them being brother and sister but that there was the romantic suggestiveness, especially since she ends up with Han anyway. Then there's the fact that Leia already knew and kiss Luke romantically, which just adds to the weirdness. I did think the kiss on the cheek was kind of cute because it could've been seen as a platonic form of affection between siblings who were really close (parents often kiss their children on the forehead, cheeks or a peck on the lips.) I think they may have been confused about their feelings because they shared this strong bond between them through The Force that they'd never felt before. I just wish they'd done more with Leia's character as Luke's sister and Anakin/Vader's daughter; they should've had her learn to use The Force like her brother, either as a Jedi like her brother or become a Sith like her father since she's so much like him, otherwise the relationship is kind of pointless.

My mom used to ship Luke and Leia... I have found some of her work and I cringe about every time I see it, this just brings back the cringe!

haha I remember a time before Return of the Jedi came out when it was really quite natural to 'ship' Luke and Leia. Especially if you were still young enough not to notice how much cooler Han is than Luke.

I have a feeling the whole Reylo ship is going to turn out the same way. There's a pretty good possibility that Rey is Luke's daughter (it's one of the most popular theories) or even Han and Leia's daughter (also a theory) so Kylo and Rey could very well being cousins or even brother and sister.

Only time will tell about Reylo. But now that Han's out of the picture, Luke and Leia can finally get back together in Episode 8.Β

I knew it was natural to do so, but still it makes me uncomfortable to think about it. Yeah, I think it is pretty obvious to everyone that Han is way cooler than Luke.

For the record Lucas didn't plan on having them as siblings initially. It was something he came up with in Episode 6.

JakeBondage In reply to Garrbatch-man [2012-02-21 23:16:36 +0000 UTC]

actually, that's not entirely accurate.
Lucas ORIGINALLY had them as siblings... then went away from that idea in favor of a 'grander' scheme... with a sister out there that Luke didn't know.
Then, when the decision was made not to go past ROTJ, it was condensed and Leia was made his twin.

Yes, in one of the first drafts for Star Wars Luke had many brothers including Deak and Windy and one sister called Leia, but in the final version of the script and in that of The Empire Strikes Back, they weren't supposed to be related. At least that's the way I see it. In one of the early drafts of Empire, Darth Vader wasn't even Luke's father.

JakeBondage In reply to Garrbatch-man [2012-02-22 19:38:44 +0000 UTC]

when the line was delivered on the set of Empire, by David Prowse, it was not "I AM your father" - but, rather, "Obi Wan WAS your father"

this was done to protect the secret. not even the actors knew.
only Lucas, and James Earl Jones

while I admire Lucas' insistence on secrecy - I think he goes overboard and causes disputes in so doing. It's how he lost Liam Neeson after Episode I, and why he got such a flat performance from Natalie Portman.

I mean, think about it... what race is Yoda?

I was talking about the first draft of Empire by Leigh Brackett in which Vader and Anakin are two seperate beings as Luke meets Anakin Skywalkers force ghost on Dagobah.

you seem to know a great deal about this topic, too... and I don't mean to get too OT, here, but what do you make of Lucas' insistence on shrouding Yoda's species in mystery?
He has nixed every attempt by novelists to even discuss the species in their books.
Now, considering his ridiculous 'everything is canon' stance, why do you suppose he has placed Yoda's species as "off-limits" ?

Garrbatch-man In reply to JakeBondage [2012-02-23 15:31:34 +0000 UTC]

I think he just wants to keep the origin of Yoda a mystery. I remember when Wolverine and Rogue's real identities were off limits to writers and the characters were much cooler then. On the other hand, George did once joke that Yoda was the offspring of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. Of course he should be careful with things like that because the other joke about Obi-Wan's birthplanet being 'Stewjon' immediately became canon.
