Description
As disenchanted as I am with Marvel Comics, I still love some of their lesser-known titles, such as Gwenpool, the current Ms.Marvel and Spider-Man: Renew your Vows. The latter, if you're unfamiliar with the title, is a glorious look at how awesome Spider-Man would be if he didn't do something so monumentally stupid and uncharacteristic as make a deal with the Devil to give up his marriage to fulfill Joe Quesada's masturbatory fantasies of the character save his aunt.In this continuity, Spidey and Mary Jane have a daughter, Annie May (Spiderling, a name which she has come to hate), who naturally inherits her dad's spider-powers. Even better is that Mary Jane uses some weird technology to siphon Spider-Man's power for her own use, essentially sharing the same superpowers, and becomes Spinnerette. The three become a crimefighting family, and it's just incredible.Β
The title maintains a generally light-hearted mood, but it has it's fair share of darker moments, such as Spider-Man actually killing Venom when he threatens his daughter's life. It focuses on Annie's life as a young kid, but in later issues, they skip forward a few years to her teenage years where she's constantly embarrassed by her dad (hence the drawing.) The best part is that this series, taking place in an alternate timeline, remains unhindered by mainstream continuity and those exhausting yearly events where "NOTHING IS EVER THE SAME AGAIN!"Β
Come to think of it, the universe in which this series takes place would actually be the TRUE 616 universe, since Mephisto had to alter the timeline so Spidey and MJ's marriage never took place. I'm sure the bigwigs at Marvel have some lame BS explanation as to why that can't be possible, but you don't get to rewrite multiverse theory to suit your own narrative. Renew Your Vows is the true 616 timeline, unaltered by the devil, so there. Nyeh!

For me, Renew your Vows should be the canon timeline. Dude, EVERYTIME Parker's life is going somewhere, they just screw it up in some way. I think that "The Return of the Black Uniform" was one of the best Spider-man sagas in the last two decades, one that shown that Parker was a grown adult, not a Peter-Pan-Syndrome weird guy. One More Day made me cry for the emotional impact of it, but then, the best Spider-man saga that would happen after that would be Superior Spider-man, and it wasn't THAT good. Spider-Verse was cool, but again, they were trying to swallow Silke on our throats with Gwen right there. If Spider-man isn't going to stay with Mary Jane, let it be Gwen Stacy, for Stan Lee's sake! And now the canon Spider-comics are full of dumb, uninteresting arcs that are solved in the most cheapest ways. It's really sad to see that the hero I grew up reading along with Batman, Daredevil, X-men and Justice League is being wasted this way, so RYV was that breath of fresh air that I needed to go on.

Thanks for introducing Renew your Vows to me, I'll certainly check it out sometime!
I actually like the idea of an older Spider-Man with an entirely different set of problems to deal with over the teenager trying to balance school & super-hero-ing and hiding his identity from his (increasingly hotter) Aunt May that we've been getting for so long.

Kind of fun. I haven't read anything of Renew Your Vows but I've been a little curious. Hell, it kind of sounds like an interesting modern take on the 90's Spidergirl of the MC2 which was a possible future before the whole Quesada thing, focusing on Pete and MJ's daughter May discovering Spider powers in her teenage years along with her dad's former life as Spiderman. I really liked that series.

I don't know if I'd call it a modern take on Spider-Girl, but I highly recommend it all the same.

I bet if Peter had the chance, he'd go back and save Uncle Ben. Β Honestly, it would be out of character for Peter to not want to save Aunt May considering he already felt like it was his fault that Uncle Ben was killed. Β So kicking the redhead, whose sole purpose in the comics was always to be sexual fanservice and was never useful, to the curb was the right choice.
So yeah, I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed "One More Day", especially since it also erased everyone's memories of Spider-Man's identity.

Hmm. Had Parker prioritized his identity as Civil War was happening over revealing it, there would have been no OMD.

I'm not really sure where you got the idea that MJ was never useful. In the Spider-Man comics I've read, she was always there to support Peter, both emotionally and financially. She's stuck by him through the shittiest moments of his life, she often helped him out with his superheroics, and she even beat the crap out of the Chameleon once.

I agree. One of the best parts of Spider-Man is that he isn't afraid or resentful of being Peter Parker. Mostly because a genuine person can't pretend to be who he isn't... and no matter the abilities or superpowers or names, a human is still a human.
Mary Jane may be fanservice, but she complements his flaws with her own. She's literally the strength that we all need when we're at our weakest.
To borrow from "Homecoming", if Peter's nothing without the suit, then he doesn't deserve a solid partner like MJ.
