Description "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven" (Luke 10:18)

In a blink of an eye Lucifer's arrogance and ambition brought shame upon him, to be made a spectacle for the kings of all nations. His fall from grace is a clear message to those leaders that regardless of their accomplishments, they do answer to a higher power. This also signifies the moment sin came into the world.

"How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.' But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit." (Isaiah 14:12-15)

Years ago at Mars Hill, Rob Bell was teaching on the fall of Satan. Many sermons have inspired me to attempt an illustration of them, but the imagery of this one was too strong to ignore. Thanks Rob.

Thank you for the use of your cloud reference . I used it loosely, but it really helped with lighting.

Ffff, well yours is definitely better than mine, lemme tell you . I love how dynamic the piece looks, and as much as I'm inclined to view Lucifer sympathetically to some extent, the vitriolic rage on his face seems most appropriate to the situation.

Think I see some Hogarth influences in the structure of the body, would I be right?

Anyway, good job.

Thank you Doc - I appreciate you dropping by to view this. His face gave me such fits, it's rewarding to hear his 'rage' finally worked. It is nice to see another perspective of the event viewing your work: your ethereal lighting and shameful expression are very well done.

Hey, I googled Hogarth and that guy would have been a great influence for this. Personally though, I'm not cultured enough to know the old masters. This pose was actually one of my first experiences trying Poser 5. It took a while bending his limbs and back for a good swan-dive, and setting my light sources for the right shadowing. The cool part about Poser is being able to rotate the subject to the most interesting angle. A screen render then serves as a guide to set up the working pencil-sketch layer.

No prob, it's always good to see other people's interpretations of things that interest me.

The inspiration for mine mostly came from The Genius of Evil sculpture. It has an interesting story to it (and the statue it replaced) that sort of parallels your interpretation of the event and mine (spite vs desperation and such). I find that amusing .

I'm guessing you googled Hogarth the painter (since he's the first one to come up in a google search), but I was referring to the much more worldly Burne Hogarth, the author of many a handy book on anatomy. There's just something about the pose and anatomy that reminded me of the way he deconstructs the human body

Ok. I found Burne Hogarth and can see where you draw the comparisons.
BTW - thanks! Those books are worth a closer look

Wow, this is just stunning - thankyou very much for using my stock, even loosely The pose in this is so dynamic - and such anguish in the expression - fantastic.

Really nice picture!
The perspective and anatomy are done very well. And his expression is superb. I've always liked the story of St. Michael and how he cast Lucifer out of heaven. I've thought about drawing something similar to this but I've never really gotten to it.

The early sketches had awful perspective, so after using Poser a few times on City of Heroes fanart commissions, I finally felt ready to do this right. I also scrapped a few expressions and hairstyles, so I'm glad you feel I settled on the right one

I just love the look of impotent rage on his face. The way he clutches his broken/torn wing, as if he's determined to hold onto who/what he is no matter what. I love how "heaven" is lurking up in the corner, the gates just barely visible. The other angels falling off in the distance really adds to the piece, Lucifer wasn't the only one to be cast out. Great lighting in this one. Also the way you painted it, if you hadn't submitted it to the digital category I would have sworn it was a traditional work. Very very well done. Definitely the best depiction of the fall that I have seen.

Thank you Ina. Thank you for the and for such a thorough, well thought out review. No small detail ever escapes your eye

It's a relief that his expression fit's with the moment. In my last two painting sessions I scrapped the disaster that was his face and took a photo reference myself (those swivel screens are a life-saver).

Those oil painting brushes really have me hooked just because of that traditional look. In my last digital attempt, Wyld Fyre, I forced myself to try Oil Pastel brushes, and had a very hard time adapting to them. Lesson learned...

Thanks again, I'm glad you like it

Thanks Ben.

Funny you bring up the toasted nuts. Half way through painting it, my nine year old advised me to change his position for that very reason. I argue that this is the best pose for the Devil to forcefully plummet to earth.

Are you still running with the Envisionaries SG?

I remember playing with you just can't remember who your character is. >.>

My scrapper was Grave Enigma. I hung up the cape this summer 'cuz I wasn't getting more than one night a week of playtime.

I'll drop in on the artists' supergroup if NSoft would offer another free weekend sometime... I just don't want to get subscribed again.
