Started fooling around with some more ideas for these guys, and drew a face that I really liked. The rest of the drawing just kinda grew from that one face.Throwing some ideas for names around and was thinking of Sam and Patch. Thoughts?

This is a nice looking pair. If they were in a comic, I'd like to see them (which is kinda a nice thing to have in comics).
Also the journey ("started with a face") sounds pretty cool and fun.

Focusing on that McCarthyism will be a nice touch. A guy who just lives and breathes that 1950's ant-reds attitude.
Sam is ALWAYS a strong name for a tough as nails sorta guy. But I don't think you need to pick one or the other-- you can just go with "Sam Patch." You've got a little alliteration and the "object" last name. Good stuff.

I was going to go with Samin, but patch likes to call him Sam, Sammy, Samuel. Anything but Samin

It would be neater if Patch was his last name. Like, his name was Patrick Patch *nods*
And short, three letter, common names for big, surly, foreign guys is always humorous ^^
