So, here's how I think everything happened:
-Discord returned and basically got rid of the elements.
-Sombra decided that, since the elements of harmony were disbanded, he had the perfect chance to take over Equestria.
-Sombra corrupted Luna with crystal magic.
-Luna turned into Nightmare Moon.
-She cast a spell to protect the rest of Equestria.
-Everyone is probably doomed.

Well her last act as 'luna' was to seal everyone within her nightmare shield thus preventing the corruption from spreading. Then again, Nightmare Moon continues to keep up the shield, so its up to you. She is a special character, lots of stuff about her that have yet to be seen.
