Description
After seeing the big She-ra reveal a couple of days ago, I decided to do this more action-oriented, Voltron-inspired design. I've been really enjoying how recent artists and sculptors have used the Greco-Roman pteruges as part of her skirt, so I incorporated that into the design. She's still quite muscular, but now her musculature is defined, instead of having Steven Universe style treetrunk limbs. Also, this version has plenty of references to He-man and Eternia, instead of removing all traces as the official version has.If you like the new design, obviously I don't mean any disrespect. You're free to like whatever you want.

I love it. She is much more buff than her original, or her new Form, something that I appreciate very much, and there is FINALLY something that hold her Cape together. (That always irritated me. I can understand that they didnt draw a full Cape with a Clasp or something back then, because Animation is expensive, but what Excuse does the Reboot have)
There is also more Gold in her Colorpalette, which gives a very nice, regal Feel to her, and also makes a wonderful Contrast to her tanned Skin.
And by giving her a Breastplate and...I dont know the right Term, lets call it a Battleskirt, we dont have to endure the Sight of those hideous Bikershorts, or what ever they are supposed to be in the Reboot.

Ugh, those shorts are the absolute worst. Thank you so much for all of the kind words! And I am officially stealing the term "Battleskirt" hahaha I love it!

This looks much better, the Dreamworks has everyone look like squishy. Not fat but like they look all soft. I mean yes She-Ra and He-Man's worlds are ridiculous but they had iconic/idealized femininity and masculinity which everyone is now afraid to show

Thanks! Yeah, I found myself wondering why everyone on the series was overweight lol. I'm not saying that everyone needed to be idealized in that beautiful John Buscema-inspired way that the original series was, but if you're designing soldiers, they should look like they do some sparring, running, weightlifting, ect. Scorpia, Entrapta, Catra...it's like the characters who are in shape must be villains lol.
To be honest, though, the physicality of the characters is the least of my complaints about the designs lol. For cryin' out loud, they gave Hordak hipster hair, and Spinnerella looks like she's about to be part of a 4th-grade dance recital. Again, Scorpia is the standout, but that's mostly because she's the only one who looks even a little bit like her 80's counterpart. Honestly, I don't think anyone on the show actually wanted to work on She-ra; they wanted to make She-raΒ into something they wanted to work on.

Hahaha just like Adora, Glimmer, Mermista ext...bratty kids trying to be superheroes. I don't knowΒ if you attempted to watch the show, but Glimmer is just awful, and Mermista is even worse.

I've seen only pieces of it, but even then they just look stupid, it's not even like a parody. It's SUPPOSED to be a reboot of She-Ra. Thank God I grew up with the 2001-2002 reboot of He-Man

Thank you! Since He-man's skin got exponentially more tanned when he transformed, I thought it would be a cool thing to do with She-ra. Plus, darker skin just works well with the white/gold color scheme. If she had a black and red costume, I would have had to keep her light-skinned.

Better than what we got.Β
I personally hate the new design, because she looks like a boy. The fact that people argue that's because she's more "toned" annoys me to no end, because Frank Cho has been cranking out crossfit eye-candyΒ www.pinterest.com/pin/30540103β¦ for years, and Frank Frazetta, the original He-Man designer, before him: female characters with appealing muscularity, that actually look athletic and feminine.Β Β

GavinMichelli In reply to The-Psychonaut [2018-08-14 16:32:48 +0000 UTC]
I also don't think she looks particularly muscular or toned. I think that Steven Universe style that they decided to go with is completely devoid of anatomy. It's just cylindersΒ and circles of different sizes. And I've seen the character designer's work (not Noelle Stevenson...the artist that actually drew the character designs that nobody wants to acknowledge) and her work is actually really good. In thisΒ case, I really think it's the producers and showrunner who've made a conscious effort ape a currently popular style, and that style is "stupid spastic omg so random" pseudo-comedy. Netflix has a bunch of great animated shows. Voltron and Troll Hunters stand out to me as some of the best cartoons ever made. They're funny (without being stupid) adventure shows, and the animation style portrays that. So does She-raΒ look like somethingΒ stoned teenagers would watch on Adult Swim?
But all that is not what really bothers me. What I can't deal with is the straight-up ugly costume. The bunny ears, the Rob Liefeld shoulder pads, the bike shorts, the giant moon boots...she looks like the butt of a joke. She's a walking critique of 80's/90's pop culture, full of irony and pith, but designed without a love of the original IP.Β
I don't knowΒ if you've ever seen Frank Cho's drawing book, Drawing Beautiful Women: The Frank Cho Method, but it's beautiful. Do yourself a huge favor and pick it up on eBay (I don't think it is available in stores, since it was a Kickstarter thing). The man is a master. He even includes chapters on ballpoint pen illustration and oil painting.

"Voltron and Troll Hunters stand out to me as some of the best cartoons ever made."
Β Right now, I'm in lesbians with 'My Hero Academia'.Β
"What I can't deal with is the straight-up ugly costume. The bunny ears, the Rob Liefeld shoulder pads, the bike shorts, the giant moon boots...she looks like the butt of a joke." I actually like the design, but because it's 80's-tastic. On that ground, that it's supposed to be silly, I think it's cute.Β
Β Dude, Frank Cho is my spirit animal. I love his book, but I wish he actually, you know, taught you how to draw beautiful women. He gives a few tips, but, really, he doesn't go into squash or body mechanics, like the knee (I know he draws his knees right, but I'm baffled by the lines he uses to represent them). I've tried VERY HARD to get two additional books on anatomy, but, because my stupid complex doesn't accept fucking mail I basically have to wait all day for a postman to, maybe, come to my door on the day they project they'll arrive. As a result 40$ worth of art know-how has been bouncing across the country, none of it arriving in my goddamn hands. I'm a little salty about that, don't know if I made that clear.Β

Lovely work. Your design is clearly female and athletic. I think they were going for "gender ambiguous" with the new official design. Like what you'd get if Prince Adam picked up the She-Ra sword by mistake...
I like your design, and I'd watch a show with this sort of art. Unfortunately, I won't get a chance to...Β
