Description
I’m so ridiculously tired, I keep missing steps as I scale the narrow stairs to the roof. For days now, I’ve been walking through a thickening fog. Doubts are eating away at me like acid, at the focus needed to maintain the necessary poker games and cold wars. My own intentions and ideals are picked apart like mud in a river of deals and debts.I told him something about updating information on locations, or using his connections. I don’t remember, and he knows too damn well what I really need. I know he’ll call me out on that when he shows up, and I won’t argue. It’s all I deserve for never being honest.
He genuinely believes I’m wasting my time. From his point of view, the difference I can make isn’t worth the sacrifices. His mind will probably never change on that. So this should be a waste of his time, as well. Still, when the heavy door falls shut behind me, he’s already standing there.
He walks up, dark eyes searching me. No questions, he just runs his hand up my chest, and I can feel myself pull a deeper breath. I put a hand on his back, he leans in and traces my mouth with his own, and the fog is clearing. Kissing me slowly, he follows as I drag him with me, backing up to the door again. Wherever he touches me, I return to myself.
He won’t stay, but I wouldn’t ask for that. This is enough. My borders are solid again.

Wow. That was a sweet and much gentler take on SOnadow than I'm used to seeing. <3

In my mind, they get rough with eachother a lot of the time, but the (verbal and literal) head-butting is shoved aside when the other really needs them, and love time is different from sparring time. (It also matters that they’re alone, here. Shadow has barb-wire-topped defenses, but that's because he feels he needs them, and well, Sonic knows what it means that he lets him past them.)

I was thinking like "can I even put the handle in the picture, shouldn't it be higher up" XD I love to take their size into account. (Have a sketch somewhere of Sonic adjusting the mike when going on-stage after somebody human-sized, too)
I imagine it's a peeve of Shadow's in human-dominated areas >3> It's so undignified to need a box to stand on to look out a window... ;D
(That chopper he rides in some levels? Must be the size of a monkeybike. So precious.)

Again, I continue to adore the texture and color this new style of paper lends your work. Your more painterly method of coloring here, with less of an emphasis on outlines and a distinct sense of detail and shading, accentuates that fact even more so in just the best of ways; the slight sheen of Shadow and Sonic's quills, for example, creating a hair-like appearance that fits so nicely, or the way you're able to distinguish the look of fur from, say, their shoes and gloves, are REALLY brought out by the added feel of the paper. And, as always, your ability to communicate the scene's emotion is impeccable; the body language here is just flat-out perfect (I especially love Shadow's gripped hand, and the way he's trying to keep a strong posture even as he's kind of slipping into Sonic).
And of course ( ), the little story works equally well. Even without listing a single name, we can tell it's Shadow, and we can tell he's talking about Sonic; you've developed a keenly recognizable voice for Shadow in your writing, dignified and trying for detachment but ultimately unable to ignore the extent to which he really does feel something for Sonic, and I likewise really love how you communicate Shadow's particular perspective on Sonic and the effect being around him has. It's elegant, it's emotional, and it fits the pic perfectly., very much so. ^3^

I really love your comments, and I really wish I was half that good at phrasing my thoughts about your art. ;_; You're so good at pointing out what does what (sure, I planned most of that, but I couldn't have TOLD you what I was doing).
(Some of it is trying too hard, I guess, I shouldn't be so stressed to make "good" comments, but I kind of blank out many times.)
I love this paper. I haven't found a thicker kind with the same "dirty gray" color, so I stick with this until it's used up. WOuld be nice to be able to use more water on it, but yeah.
Re: the emotional aspects, I imagine Shadow would find it hard both to admit the feeling of needing someone as a person, and of needing their plain physical touch. He's conflicted both about needing others, and about his own body and its responses, and Sonic is much easier about the physical aspects - even if he isn't necessarily better at admitting he needs people emotionally.
I mean, Sonic doesn't come to him just because he likes him in general. Shadow gives something he needs, too, and whether he consciously thought about it or not, whether he likes to admit it, he knows it.
(Me and ~DmGirl are on about this right now, for instance how Sonic needs someone who grounds him in a way, Shadow needs someone to remind him he's a person with choices, not just someone's working or defunct tool, a savior OR a monster. Etc, so they'd both put up with a lot of crap to keep seeing each other, and both would have an eye out for the other, even if they might not say it openly.)
...I hope I can develop a good voice for Sonic - it's harder because I don't like his current VAs or lines much. Actually I listen to other performances by Kusao Takeshi, the guy who did his voice in the old arcade game, because I liked that best. Probably going to end up using his speech patterns from the OVA, though, since I don't really have a pattern to go on from the arcade...

Aww, don't sell yourself short; I love reading YOUR comments, and I think you are able to word yourself very well in them. <3 Don't stress out over making "good" comments, I agree, because I think you make plenty of those already.
That's an aspect of your take on Shadow I really dig, this notion that he is so aware of his Artificial Nature that he literally can't sit right in his own skin, because he knows on some level it isn't "really" "his".
I'll be interested to see how your voice for Sonic develops, actually, especially if you turn to the rather-snarky OAV version as your basis. ^_^

Well, if I get hard to follow, just let me know.
I like the potential for concepts like that with Shadow; he's literally been made as a tool by others, not spontaneously but with a plan completely laid out. When that plan changed, it still wasn't him doing it; it was more re-shaping from the outside. It seems natural to me that he'd view his own body as a tool others have used, that he's taken control of, rather than viewing it as part and parcel of WHO he is.
And then way down the line, there's moments when Sonic touches him and suddenly there's no confusion at all, and Shadow the Person is there without any effort. Which of course makes him feel exposed, because he's so comfortable in viewing himself as anything but that.
I want to make it clear that interacting with Tails softens him up a bit - just like it toughens Tails up a little - so he'll likely be even more snarky /crass before they meet.
I love the OVA Sonic.
Eggman: "So I built this thing that's going to explode now, because someone poked it. And the fastest here should go disarm it."
Sonic: "No way. You built that stupid contraption to begin with. Why should I clean up after you?"
<3
I know many fans consider his OVA self a jerkass, but frankly I just see a guy who has frequently been called on to fix problems for others, who's guarding his own time and peace of mind. After all, the President et al must have LET Eggman carry on underground, building weird stuff, and could have prevented this from starting. Why should he 1. blindly trust Eggman's not lying and 2. clean up a mess that others made?
Is it OK to expect someone to keep helping you time and again, regardless of circumstances, because they've already helped you once or twice? Does ability automatically translate into responsibility?

I will, but I'm not terribly worried about that happening. ;3
I'm reminded a bit, actually, of one of my favorite understated elements of "Gundam Wing"; in contrast to most other "Gundam" series, the many pilots of the show wound up piloting multiple Mobile Suits over the course of the series, including Gundams that "belonged" to other Gundam Pilots. It keenly emphasized the fact that, for all their grandeur, the Gundams and Mobile Suits were ultimately just weapons, interchangeable amongst those who used them.
In much the same fashion, I think that's a bit how Shadow sees his body; it's just a weapon that he so happens to control. All the more reason that Sonic challenging that belief would be so scary for him; as much as it may isolate and dehumanize him, after all, that notion of his body simply being a tool he's taken control of also provides some degree of protection, and like a man torn out of his armor, it'd be quite the shock to have that shiedling taken away, regardless of its ultimate benefits.
I definitely look forward to seeing that intersection in action, how Tails grounds Sonic and how Sonic frees Tails, not only in the "After" but in the "Before"; the transition, the "mechanics" for want of a better word of how their friendship brings them from who they WERE to who they BECOME.
And yes, I think there was a time where OVA!Sonic's brisk attitude turned me off, but these days I find it pretty endearing in its own way. To be sure, it's a decidedly more honest portrayal of the kind of "Cool" SEGA wants Sonic to be than we usually get, and as you say there's still a certain kind of Code to it. It's not just thuggishness, it's a belief that he doesn't need to let the World push him around.

GeckosFancies In reply to Bunny-Kirby [2012-10-14 19:37:38 +0000 UTC]
That's my main reason for liking that couple idea too. I usually picture them as a brother type relationship, but in either case, they know each other really well. I like to think Tails knows Sonic better than he knows himself, sometimes!
So I think they would already know what quirks the other has, and still like each other. And I imagine Tails gets all caught up in his inventions when he has a new idea, locking himself away in his workshop for days So most people might get annoyed with him as a boyfriend, or feel ignored - but Sonic would just find something of his own to do until Tails is done, because Sonic does his own things all the time anyway. And the same way, Tails would understand Sonic can't stay around all the time, but needs to be on his own adventures a lot. And then they can have some of the adventures together. Something like that.
