Life in Beacon – A RWBY Fanfiction – Chapter 01 – “Hunger”
Ruby was hungry.
Now, it wasn’t the normal kind of hungry, the kind that made you ravenous for meat or pasta, that made your stomach grumble and made you smell even the slightest whiff of food. No, it was a hunger that ransacked her mind and agitated her more and more every passing moment.
Ruby wanted chocolate chip cookies.
Who could deny that begging face, the puppy-dog eyes, or the sweet voice that made her seem so much younger that she really was? Nobody could, not even Ozpin. Nobody but her team, that is.
“You are not wasting our food credits for cookies, Ruby,” scolded Weiss, “we’ve already had two months of starvation because you spent it all.”
Blake was much cooler, but she took the same side as Weiss. “Cookies aren’t that healthy for you, even if you claim they power your semblance.”
Yang didn’t even bother to reason with Ruby. Using her powers as an elder sister, her response to the incessant begging was short and sweet: “Nope.”
In truth, Ruby didn’t need cookies. Her semblance was powered by any form of sugar, so candies would have been sufficient, but her love for cookies, whether they be crunchy chocolate or soft sugar cookies, was greater than any other love there could be in the world.
And so it came to pass that team RWBY was sitting in the cafeteria with team JNPR, grumbling about how CRDL was getting worse and worse each passing week. Even after the little Ursa incident, Cardin had not learned his lesson. The Vytal tournament had still several weeks to come, so there was little hope of using that to teach Cardin a lesson. While the teams heatedly discussed possible methods of showing him who was boss (“No, we’re not breaking his legs, Nora. That’s the fourth time you’ve brought it up.”) Ruby sulked, missing the feeling of a cookie-based sugar rush. She picked with a fork at her plate of veggies, which Yang had so kindly added extra to, gloomily observing the bland tastes and dull appearance of the carrots and cabbage.
“Please, Yang, can I use the credit card?”
Yang grinned overly-cheerfully, “Of course! But no cookies.”
“Aww, Yang! That’s the whole point! I haven’t had a cookie for three days now…” cried the little red riding hood. “I need my juice!”
“No!” snapped Weiss, slowly growing impatient with the immature team leader. “And stop asking!”
Jaune thought about helping the poor girl, whose brilliant red cape seemed to gray each day she went without a treat. He was just about to open his mouth when he caught Pyrrha’s glare at him. She whispered forcefully, “This is not your problem. Leave them be.”
To Pyrrha, this was a case of a weak leader and she would not have her team’s leader sympathize with her. A strong leader must be able to sacrifice anything for their team – yet here was Ruby, asking for cookie after cookie, starving her team for – what, two months now? “Ruby, you should really learn to control your … addiction, for a lack of a better term.”
The irritated teen replied coldly, “I’d like to see you go a day without thinking about Jaune.”
Of course, Pyrrha blushed furiously, and refrained from countering the argument for fear of making a fool of herself.
“Please, Blake, you’ve got to help me!”
“Why don’t you just learn how to bake cookies? I’m sure the chefs won’t mind you using their ovens outside of lunch and dinner hours.” It was very true; Blake secretly cooked varieties of fish whenever she didn’t have classes, often baking or steaming them (though fried fish tasted great as well). “I can teach you a thing or two about baking.”
If there could be one picture of the term ‘squee’, Ruby was in the perfect pose. “Oh, really? Thank you so much, Blake! Can we go now?”
Blake smiled slightly, and looked up from her book. “Once I finish this chapter.”
Yang snickered. “I’ve heard that before, how many pages are left?”
“42.”
Yang fell over laughing as Ruby slammed her head on the table. “BLA-AKE! I want cookies NOW!”
“I’m just kidding. I’m almost done,” replied Blake softly. “Just give me a moment.”
Ren, the normally quiet one, murmured in his deep tones, “Anyone want pancakes? If they’re going to be cooking in there, I might as well.”
Several hands went up and cheers were heard, including Nora’s. “I’ll go get us some more of that syrup!”
Ren nodded agreement. “But don’t eat it all on the way back, okay? And stay off Ursi.”
Nora didn’t even respond; she hopped off merrily to the Forever Fall forest in search for the delicious red sap. Ren sighed, and slowly headed back to his team’s room. “I’m just going to get some batter. Do you girls need anything?”
Blake shook her head, placing a little cat-shaped bookmark between the pages of her book. “I have everything we need in the kitchen. I knew Ruby’d reach the point where she’d drive us all crazy, so I had them prepare the ingredients beforehand.” She pulled at Ruby’s cape, beckoning for her to follow. Ruby tailed her like a puppy waiting for a treat.
“Well, that solves that!” exclaimed Yang, finally recovering from her laughter. “I knew Blake had something up her sleeves.”
Weiss shrugged. “At least this way I have cookies to eat too.”
