The Mind Flayers also known as the “Illithids” which translates into the common tongue in “Mind ruler”. These sadistic aberrations feared by sentient creatures on Toril due to their powerful psionic abilities. A Strange magic that is unknown in origin but some sages theorize that Psionics is a weak thread from the weave of magic or has a connection to the astral plane. Regardless of what psionics is. From their twisted lairs deep in the Underdark, these aberrations sought to expand their dominion over Faerun controlling their minds to use them as obedient thralls. And devouring their victims brains while they are still breathing. While they are highly intelligent, they lack any sense of empathy and instead use their powers to capture, experiment, and expand. Their thirst for knowledge is matched only by their hunger for humanoid brains, which grant them the essential nutrients and psychic energy they need to serve the dark whims of their elder brain masters.

Mind Flayers have bulging octopus like heads with tentacles and beaked maws with rings of fangs to suck the brains out of the unfortunate souls. emaciated wiry bodies covered in mucus. They lack visible ears but have nostrils. They have bo visible gender characteristics. They have sunken glowing eyes that show fierce intelligence and nightmarish intent. They often smell like cooking ingredients often like garlic or vanilla. They wear lose robes and breastplates for protection and easier levitation. They saw themselves as masterminds that twisted others into serving their own sinister and far-reaching schemes. Believing to be superior to the races of Faerun. Illithids were megalomaniacal in the extreme, tyrants driven by an immense ambition and greed. They devour brains for the memories, and knowledge that they gain from it.

They form colonies that are close to humanoid settlements for slaves and nourishment. These colonies are designed with brain like patterns and eldritch symbols. Leading the mind flayers is an Elder brain. A massive sized brain made up of the brains of mind flayers long who have passed. A living knowledge trove that leads the colony. The elder brain sits in a brine full of mind flayer tadpoles, the first stage of a mind flayers life. Devouring each other and growing until they infect a humanoid and devouring its brain. Slowly mutating the humanoid into another mind flayer. Some Mind Flayers often rebel against the elder brain and leave the colony for knowledge. Mind Flayers fear the arcane, for they do not understand it like Psionics. They forbid any of the colony to learn it but they like to gather spell books to study them. Some mind flayers are often drawn towards the arcane, these renegades are banished from the mind flayer society and these mind flayers often side with humanoids. The mind flayers have a love of cruel experimentation they preform on their slaves, leaving them scared forever like the Kuo Toa, the duergar, and the gith.

Mind flayers have strange ships that can sail through the air called Nautiloids. These ships were flying living creatures from the depths of the ocean. These horrible floating ships had tentacles that would destroy and capture poor humanoids and bring them deep inside the slave chambers in which to experiment with. They protected the mind flayers sensitive eyes from Amaunator’s light, the sun. These ships did have limits on how high they could fly but they could shift between the realms of the cosmology. The mind flayers have lost the knowledge on how to create these ships and only use them as a last resort option.

The mind flayers claim to have had an empire that spanned across know Faerun. The origins of these octopus beasts was unknown. We’re they from the underdark? No. Were they from the future? No, you dolt!! They were from our very nightmares, the FarRealm, a place from which aberrations hailed from. They ruled this realm as emperors but how did they get here? 11,000 years ago while humanity was still new to magic, they were started to create portals. But they opened a portal to the Far Realm and out came the mind flayers. They started to enslave the humanoid races of Faerun and forced them to build grand cities and monuments for their Eldritch conquerors. This started a new age, the “AGE OF NIGHTMARES!!!”

Aberrations such as beholders and more came to Toril. This empire was growing but it was slowly rotting from the inside. The mind flayers took the human tribes to the far realm, these humans were experimented on and mutated over the years. Until they become no longer humans. They were now called the Gith. A grand leader was forming rebellions with her enslaved people, the races of Faerun were forming armies, and even some renegade mind flayers rebelled against the empire. They destroyed the hold the mind flayers once had on the world, destroying their ships and cities. The Gith destroied the illithids empire from the far realm and killed all of them in that nightmarish realm. The mind flayers empire was gone, the few that survived retreated to the Underdark. These survivors were now slowly dying out from Githyanki attacks, slaves rebellions, and adventurers destroying the colonies.

The Mind flayers will be gone. Not today, not tomorrow but soon. They will be nothing more than a memory. A bad dream from which that will be forgotten. So destroy any mind flayer colonies you may find and free their slaves. They are a blight upon the land.
