Every couple of months (depending on which queue you go in) you go on call.

for thosae of you nmot afmiliar with the concept, you are given a phone which you have to answer 24/7 (well, outside of office hours, but someone invariably calls it during the day) and fix the IT issues of whoever calls you. this could be anything from the half a million quid AS400 system being on fire to somsone locking themselves out of their account and needing you to reset a password.

people have called me at stupid times to say we were not making milk this weekend, it's been a hard one and i've not slept enough, but it's all good fun in the end. Challenging, exposure to other systems, money for doing it, time off when you get called, earns you a lot of browny points and makes you look generally great (assuming you can do it)

Been sitting in this chair for 36 hours in the last 2 days. my VPN has been connected for over 45 hours now and will stay that way until i leave for work tomorrow morning about 8am.
