Description this is one of the three pieces i did specifically for a tiny art show last sunday, at a festival in the village where i live.

im really not so sure about this one (aside from yay lovecraft!). the initial sketches with just the shapes of the tentacles and the colored halo of the divers lamp had a nice feel to it. once i started painting it as an underwater scene, though, all the graphical impact got lost. underwater means heavy athmospheric perspective, i.e. low contrast in a lot of places.

i wrestled with it back and forth for quite a while, and then decided to show it, despite the original concept not really working. i added the subtitle "an exercise in beckett" – an allusion to the quote "nothing else ever. ever tried, ever failed. no matter. try again, fail again. fail better." so, hopefully i may fail better in the future

Very nice; and chilling. This is probably what the protagonist of "The Temple" would find when he put on a diving suit to explore the city.

wee, many thanks for the nice comment and the fave!

its kinda funny, but i always imagined the scenery of the temple to be completely underwhelming to an impartial observer, and only be the glorious sunken city with an actual temple to those already affected. *sigh* i really need to find time to re-read those

wee, thankies
i would have loved to retain more of the graphicness of the sketch, but alas :/ (despite being a bit wiser, i feel really dumb for not having thought this through)

I love this, personally. If you're not fond of the low contrast, I'd say take artistic license and go in with reds and purples. The concept and composition are really nice.
And that quote is awesome.

i fear, reds and purples would kill the underwater feel dead -,-
i played with the idea of making another version thats less of a painting, more of a colored graphic ink drawing, much like mignolas hellboy work. that might marry contrast and athmosphere a bit more successfully than this. maybe. lets see if ai have the urge of revisiting it.

yeah, that quote is amazingly good. not only does it sound cute, with that seemingly cynical edge, but it also makes obvious how constructive it is to wrestle with a problem and fail.

i agree with you. if you do revisit, be sure to post it here! I'd love to see it (and i'm sure your other followers would, too)!
