Prosthetic Unicorn Horn Schematic made by meThis is located in the Canterlot Museum of Ancient Oddities.
And was discovered during an excavation,
of an old Dwarf Pony ruin located in,
the northern mountain range near Prance.
The excavation was lead by "Baub Curio"
who is the manager of the Museum of Ancient Oddities.

It just says what materials the different parts need to be made from.

Still the design and the parts used makes this thing look realistic.
The crystal amplifies the signal from a broken horn, while the rods act like the horn itself. The outer shell is purely for protection and signal control.
That's how I see it.
