Description WARNING, FIRST ATTEMPT AT USING A WACOM TABLET SO EXCUSE ANY CHEESINESS. CLOSER VIEW FOR MORE DETAIL ALSO.

Well, what better way to start using a graphite tablet than to start colouring on your own pictures. This is the colouring how i forsee Rustbucket, looking kinda weathered if you ask me. I guess not a bad attempt for a couple of hours and my first attempt.

Comments welcome.

Wacom tablet is still just a tool - you look like you're getting along well already. I find working on paper first is a great way to crystalise my ideas before bringing them to the computer, but now I find I draw straight to screen quite a bit too. A lot less messy than getting out the airbrush also. What I really like about this pic is your use of diffused light and the fact you have let some of your original pencil lines show through. I feel it ads a story book quality (as opposed to comic book) to the image. Good use of colour, balanced and intuitive. Good work, two thumbs up!

Wonderful. Great aged effect with the grass growing from him, I also like how the rust coming down from his eye makes it look as though he has been crying. And anything sketchy sort of adds to the flavour if you ask me *shrug*
well done on your first attempt, it looks great.

For a begginer, you're doing great. I'd say, while you can still beat it, just about the only thing you need to seriously look into is what appears to be a fear of high-contrast color schemes.

Good work.

It's so ... quiet and sad. The iron rust under the 'eye' seems to me the result of many tears, and the softness of the background emphasizes the figure of the robot. The color i think it's o.k. I really love this

Cheesiness? WHAT cheesiness!? This is really good for your first attempt on a tablet!! You should've seen mine <_< then again, I only had the art-program following with my tablet...it was needless to say, a bad program...anyway..

Really great pic! Poor dear looks so sweet and lonely ;_; for some reason, it makes me think of The Iron Giant or something. Or Bicentennial Man. Yeah... something along the lines of those 2.

don't mean to sound like an ass ... but i prefer the uncolored/bluetone version of this piece.

the colors in the earlier version suited the mood completely: melancholy, forlorn, yet stll hopeful, somehow.

is there a print of the original available?

genesis In reply to fatal-euphoria [2004-08-26 05:13:52 +0000 UTC]

yeh i like my black and white sketches best rather than colour but for my folio here i just do this occasionally to show i can do a lil bit of colouring when needed. and as for a print being available i applied for a credit card today so expect a prints account within a week or so.

how do you like the tablet, i'm mulling over in my head if its worth it or not. If i can produce the same quality work, excellent, no more buying paper and inks/pencils... but i have doubts that I'll lose soemthing on the way. ie it doesn't look like traditional media anymore, especially when I just want to do simple b&w. what do you think?

You have good tablet skills already. I like this because it recalls chinese wall scrolls and an anime called 'Furi Kuri'. The light is a little bit diffused for the sun being almost completely uncovered, but that works equally well as it setting or rising. One of the first things I noticed was the texture of the grass. While it's nice, it's in more detail and clearer (perhaps because grass is easier to draw?) than the rest of the picture, and it draws the eye away from the subject of your picture. The position of the head was well choosen, the clouds in the background frame it well, and the line of the body and its counterpoint in the sun work to draw the eye in. I'm amazed at how you manage to make his face so full of expression when he has so few features to express with.
