Description Here are some custom 8-bit Mario characters.
They are all to scale with Mega Man, and with each other.
I used this handy dandy image for determining each character's sizes. www.mariowiki.com/images/3/36/…
(and for Rosalina, I looked at her size compared to Peach in MKWii's award ceremony cutscene, and her size to Mega Man in SSB4)

They may not be EXACTLY to scale, but that's because certain features of them had to be enlarged to look good (like Waluigi's head)

Also includes the older designs for Princess Toadstool and Princess Daisy, Birdo holding one of those Crystals from SMB2, as well as Sonic, Pac-Man, & a Mega Man reference sprite.

UPDATED: Bowser and a Pianta are now here too!

i know Mega Man, and Pac-Man aren't Mario characters. Howerer, Sonic the Hedgehog is a Mario character on Mario & Sonic Olympics games, but Sonic the Hedgehog is not a Mario character in all Sonic games SEGA made.

With less colours, this could work as an 8-bit style Smash fan game! But jclkay2, you can use a technique called Sprite Layering to give the illusion of sprites with 6 colours, similar to the Mega Man games, Contra, or even Ducktales! But yes, for some, you will have to lower the colour count. Usually, it's just two three-colour sprites being stacked, making six colours in total.

this looks like 16-bit not 8-bit.

Do you take requests? These look really good, and I need a character of mine made into an SMB-style 8-bit sprite.

Yes

The only one on here that I did not make myself was Mega Man.

Very cool! My favorite here is Birdo. Although personally I would've liked if you made Mario and Luigi a bit taller.

geno2925 In reply to webkinzspongebob [2014-07-15 03:51:27 +0000 UTC]

I agree. I think Birdo is one of the better ones on here.

Also, the reason why Mario & Luigi aren't really that tall, is because they were meant to be to scale with Mega Man.
Actually, they're a little TOO TALL now!

(Plus, if I were to make them any taller, I'd have to make everybody else taller, as all these sprites are meant to be "to scale" with each other)

Ohh ok. For some reason though I think some of the characters look too tall for some reason. For example look at this picture:Β static.giantbomb.com/uploads/o…

Birdo looks short in that picture but in sprite form she looks too tall compared to Megaman and Sonic. I'm not saying this in a mean way though.

Heh, I was using this image for scale
www.mariowiki.com/images/3/36/…
(Of course, with Rosalina and the Pianta, I had to use their sizes in-game compared to Mario, as they're not on this chart)

errr...
8 bit sprite rule:
just 3 colors, but black and white areΒ exceptions.

geno2925 In reply to MGZE [2014-07-15 03:46:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh no.

Yes, there's three colours per sprite.
HOWEVER.
Sprites can be layered. Which is, two sprites with different palettes being displayed for one object.
This is done by games like Super Mario Bros. 2 (the playable characters. Notice how they have FOUR colours, yet the limit is THREE), Super Mario Bros. 3 (the Koopas. Again with the FOUR instead of THREE), and most notably the Mega Man games (which the layering technique is commonly nicknamed after: "Megamanning")
For example, in Mega Man, Mega Man's body is one sprite. His face, is another that is "drawn" with the body, to give the illusion that he cheats the three colours per sprite rule.
Usually, most layered sprites only use two layers. However, some of them use three, creating a maximum of NINE colours.
IF you notice, those little palette things beneath each sprite are put in rows of THREE for a reason!
Additionally, even some SNES games use layering! with layering on SNES, just two layers creates 30 colours for one sprite!
(For example, Donkey Kong Country. Funky Kong is one sprite, but the surfboard he holds is another, allowing for Funky to have the same amount of colours as the other characters, without having to sacrifice any colours for his rad surfboard.)

Also, black and white are not exceptions.
Actually, one can use transparency to their advantage. If a background is all one colour, if a sprite uses that colour, it can be replaced by transparency in order to not use up a colour in it's palette.
This is usually done with black backgrounds.
Additionally, some Game Boy games take advantage of this.
For example, the white in every sprite of Super Mario Land is actually transparency. Because, even with the four shades of colours, the Game Boy can only display three of the four on sprites.
