This alien landscape is filled with rock formations that are created by the rising of calcium rich water. All of this used to be underwater. As the lake dried up, they were revealed. For most part of the 20th century , this is where LA gets its water from. It was not until recently did that stop because the water level was getting too low., threatening wildlife.

Look carefully, the black stuff are actually flies. There were millions of them all around. It was like an interactive floor you walk on. Every step you take swarms of insects fly away from your feet. The Ground appeared alive!
