Description
OK, if it's possible to enter the contest at ~FlintofMother3 with 2 pictures, I want to! I mean, with this one and with the card I submitted a bit earlier...Actually, I wanna enter with the submission which Flint likes the best! (en serio, Flint, dime si puedo entrar con ambos, el dibujo y la carta, o solo uno de los dos... si se puede solo con uno, sera con la carta, pero espero que el dibujo completo cuente para la calificacion final... pues se uso para hacer la carta).
The deal is that I was gonna enter with just the card... until I saw how bad the background got cropped. I really like the background of this picture a lot. I'm not submitting this immediately after the card to hog up for favs, I do so because I want you to check out the full background!
Check out Marion's card [link] for more info.
Advanced critique encouraged, also.

I like the uber twisted background. Your artistic skills are something any artist would wish for. I think it's in the way that you make your art so dynamic.

Oh gosh, this is pretty darn cool! (And I read your description for the card version, too, so I know where it's coming from background-wise. ^^) The perspective/point of view really seems to be the selling point on this one... and you picked up so many subtle details with it. For example, we can see the bottoms of those cartoony Mario clouds... I've never seen that done before! And the subtle contors of her boots are incredibly well done, too. (Those are honestly what Mario's should look like more often.
)
Anyway, really impressive work all around here!

Thank you very much! I really like the perspective here, even if it isn't perfect. I thought that it could be a nice idea to draw the clouds like that... oddly, they are my favorite part of the background. XD

I can imagine, clouds can be fun to draw.
And really, can anyone be expected to get a fishbowl background perfect? Maybe if you used a computer program or something, but... getting the idea across usually does the trick! And this one really does look fine!

Splendido! A great job all around, from the well defined lineart to the appearance and shading of each material (hair, wood, etc.) Marion is drawn really on model.

Thank you very much! I always try to give the correct texture and shading to each kind of material, including clothes, even if it's not so noticeable. And shading hair is very fun.

It's quite refreshing to see some artists pursue traditional media for their work in a genre which is increasingly saturated with digital creations, not necessarily because there is anything inherently wrong with the latter, but rather its a nice change of pace and allows one to better stand out amongst the crowd. All up, your work here is fairly solid, although various flaws, both large and small prevent this piece from achieving its full potential.
Strong, distinct choice of colours not only suit the more simplistic Marioverse presentation, but are also a good combination to show off the capabilities of the often limited pencil. Great lighting and shading effects help add a little bit of extra detail by merely altering the tone of the area's base colour; Marion's design is rather difficult to fault. Utilising a spherical distortion perspective is well integrated through Marion's proportions and pose acting in compliment to the warped background, being both cartoony and an eye grabber at the same time. Small little development decisions such as the Cloud faces, Music Block, Mushroom hairband and Mario's trusty hammer complete the fan art appeal, particularly considering Marion looks ready for platform jumping adventure.
In any situation where grey lead is used, colour bleeding is virtually inescapable for small areas, but unfortunately, it's quite apparent in relatively normal areas as well, where colour will exceed line art boundaries due to user error. Continuing on this theme, the manner in which you have filled in the sky works counter to the spherical field portrayed. It's understandably difficult to pull off, but it just feels out of place when you see the sky angled in non-uniform directions. Background object could have done with some additional shape refinement not only to boost the quality of their appearance, but also to improve their consistency with the visual perspective.
By no means should you feel this is a horrible piece, as there are many positive attributes on offer. Think of this as more of an opportunity to expand and improve upon your technique with this medium for the future; you've got the skills and dedication to have come this far, so you can certainly go further.

Mama mΓa! Thank you, thank you very very much for taking your time to write this long and thoughtful critique. Really, nobody makes comments like you do, Toad (eh, can I call you Toad, right?).
Thank you! Actually, though, I should give a chance to digital media. I AM supposed to know how to use Photoshop and other digital art programs by now... I lack an excuse, I need to get out of my comfort zone for once!
You are right about this having a lot of pretty notable flaws (specially how the sky is colored, that really bugs me). But hey, I always look up to improve. Maybe I should have had more patience with the coloring... but in the other hand, I was running out of time (to submit this to the contest).
Thanks a lot! Difficult for me to say more about this since you practically covered everything that is to say about the picture. Though the Mushroom hairpin and Mario's hammer are part of Marion's design (I mean that I didn't come out with them). The hammer was gifted to Marion by her papa. Oh, and I was aiming for that! I wanted her pose and the perspective to say "let's go for a platforming jumping adventure!".
I gotta tell you that the color errors, specially the ones where I went out of the line, are a thousand times more noticeable in the computer than in person... the drawing looks a lot better in paper, actually. I admit that the shapes of the background objects (specially the hills) could indeed use a refinement.
Of course! Thank you very much, again, for the long and thoughtful critique. I enjoyed reading it lots. Oh, and thanks for faving it!

It's no problem at all really. If it's one thing that the fan art genre needs more of, it's critical analysis and insight to improve both the artist's skills and the quality of a genre which is frequently looked down upon.
Anything mildly Toad related for abbreviation purposes is perfectly fine. I hardly expect people to be typing out my entire username every single time they want to address me, after all.
Many people find that colouring is most enjoyable part of the drawing process, simply because you get to witness your own creation slowly spring to life. Whilst sufficient dedication and effort will allow desired results to flow through (for anything really), time constraints often limit any product from achieving its maximum potential. In such cases, compromises have to be made; something "Good enough" is better than something "Incomplete". Separating the two is a difficult challenge however...
Computers are a wonderful way of getting a second pair of unbiased eyes on traditional media. You will be surprised how often you can actually spot flaws on the original after seeing the digitised version. There's no harm in going back to the original and performing some additional touch ups on much needed areas; if worst comes to worst, you can keep the initial scan and improve for next time.

I do enjoy coloring! Even when I still need to learn to have more patience with it. Being patient and taking your time is completely worth it after watching the final result.

Now isn't she a cutie! x3 I had tried long ago to make a daughter-OC for Mario and Peach, but this beats that ancient drawing by a HUGE long mile! Heheh, good job on this! Love how her expression is just like that of her fathers, yet she can dress lady-like like her mother!

Ah, it's that fisheye view from the Super Mario Land 2 box art! Very great background, I see you combined the spotted SMW hills with the SMB3 blocks! Great shading on the blocks and the clouds, also. Heh, this reminds me of a Wario Ware: Twisted game where the first level of SMB also gets bent into a half-circle.

GeoPyro In reply to Artemendo [2009-04-11 22:44:25 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I tried to combine several elements from different Mario games. The aqua-blue hills with white spots have a flavor of SMW and NSMB, that blue Pipe mostly has a flavor of SMW, those big blocks are from SMB3, the brick block has a flavor from SMB, and the Note Block is from SMB3 and SMW.
Aw man, I never player nor owned Wario Ware: Twisted, I always wanted it, and is one of those games that is useless to pirate or emulate. Sounds like fun, actually.

Thank you very much! The design of this character was done by ~FlintofMother3 .
I like the fisheye perspective here, even if it does not make sense at all.
