So, uh, I read something the other day...
Did you know that playing chess was a common form of flirting back in the day of Shakespeare? Or maybe it was Shakespeare who used it to convey flirting and/or courtship... I forget. BUT ANYWAY! It was brought back into practice later among the upper class and well-read. (so, maybe it was just a Shakespeare thing, after all...) Charles falls into both those categories and Erik, despite his pretty brutal childhood, obviously became a well-educated man, himself. Heh.
