Thanks I know what you mean...
These images are not easy to make, because you have to use the glasses for extended periods of time while creating the image.

It really seems like the entire universe is lining up to give me 3d stuff the same day I got some 3d goggles.

I think you could say It's the universe's intelligence at work. It know you just got them 3-D goggles...

...you just offset the whole image to one side and made an anaglyph, didn't you? That moves the entire thing back into the screen, but it's still flat.

Yes, didn't use a depth-map and most of what I do looks flat anyway with or without a map.
2 stereo images is what's really needed.
How can I do it with only on image and make it come out not flat?

Well, you can create your own depth map, or you can rotoscope out elements and move or distort them by hand. The tough part is adjusting them just enough to make it look natural - it's easy to go overboard or not do enough. If you've used depth maps before, give them another go - just try to use a wider range of shades. That means more "layers" and more depth overall.

Your sure right about that... depth-maps in gimp seems easy but it's very time consuming and sometimes you think you've made a great depth-map, but when you apply it for a displacement it look like crap.
So if I make different depth-maps on other layers, using a wider range of grays, this could give the image more depth?
In gimp, I would have to combine all the layers together to make one layer with all the other depth-maps incorporated. I'm guessing I would have to change every layers mode to combine them into one layer with all the depth-maps?
I have PSE8 and Gimp, but can't do displacement with PSE8.
Thanks for the tip... I have to keep at it a little longer. The tutorials make it all look very easy to do.

You could do it that way, though I don't see any benefit over just keeping the depth map as one layer. I meant it adds more "layers" of depth to the converted final image.
