One of the many immense faces carved in the towers of Bayon Temple at Angkor. Scholars now believe that this is a composite of the Buddha and of Jayavarman VII, the king of the Khmer who ordered so much of the building at Angkor.Related content

It's an experience to see one, but at Bayon there are scores of these immense, smiling visages -- one on each side of the four-sided columns which once number over 50 -- so that one feels completely surrounded at some points. Psychedelic!
