What is the point of llamas? I never understood their purpose.

It was an April Fool's gag from a few years ago that never went away. There is no point to it other than to have the little llama badge on your page. XD

It's also a good way to get people to look at your page. It's almost standard practice now to give llamas back when you receive them, and that involves going to their page
