Description This was an ambitious project that I undertook earlier this year. The idea I was toying with was to construct a dark, apocalyptic world using a majority of original photographs. I went out for 2 days and shot hires digital photos of industrial plants, skies, etc. I had a few hundred photos to sort through. The final piece uses about 24 original photos, which make up about 75% of the image. The rest was created with various stockart of fire, etc. I photoshoped this piece together in about 3 days, and it took a hell of a lot of work, to turn the bright images into a nightmare. The final composition is completly composited and represents no single place. I cropped this image from the original completed version. The original had more debries in the foreground. Everything was done in print res and I ended up with a 300+ meg file. I'm particularly happy with the glowing edges of buidings, where you can almost feel the heat. Comments welcome.

Update: Poster prints are available now up to 51" wide (3 sizes available). Find out more here: [link]

I remember this, and I could have sworn I had commented on it earlier. Oh well. After reading the description, I can see how much work actually went into this, and it's purely amazing. I can see why it was selected as a Daily Deviation. Incredible work.

Wow, thanks everyone! I never expected this piece to get this much attention. Yeah, this piece was a lot of work, but that's how it goes right? We all get obsessive about our own stuff, because it's the most rewarding kind of work to do. It was done over a mad three days, working late into the night.

I like people's takes on the presence of humans, or lack thereof. My intital thought when I created this was I wanted something that showed the aftermath of some great destruction. I had played with the idea of putting people in, but ruled it out after I realized that it would be very hard to orchestrate.

Other things that never made it into the piece was a train wreck and a power plant meltdown. I had wanted to put those in, but found the composition overwhelming and I had some majorly incompatable perspectives.

I am thinking that it would be cool to do a remix of this piece. Maybe play with some other element, or shift the focus slightly, and/or a color shift.

this is an award-winning piece, gfxmonkey! And I don't just mean the DD. Keep this in your portfolio, enter it in some contests, and let us all know how it fares. I mean it. This is good enough to win you some dough or whatever prizes are at stake.

I like the piece, it looks very dark and brooding. Obviously you put a lot of effort into this. Very nice.

Could use some flaming spheres of death from above though.

And I would've made the sky deep red, crimson, make it seem more chaotic and hot.

First let me say this is a very well done piece and I can appreciate the time you put into it but...

It doesn't even really look like "The Apocalypse", it looks more like an accident at an oil refinery. And I am SICK of this end of the world shit! I mean, damn - no matter how much you want it to, the universe doesn't do what you want it to. It's not going to end tomorrow!

You all say it's so inspiring, for WHAT? A new doomsday device? Been hangin' with Pinky and The Brain? Geeeez!

That is a kick ass concept, feels like the start of some heavy action movie or game.

Suggestions: clean up the puddle a bit (bottom left), the water is as rough as the pavement. The reflection is awesome and that would bring it out a little bit more while not being dominant.

Bottom right of the mushroom cloud (black and red area) contrasts with the rest of the flames and explosions in the picture. Change the hue just a bit to match the rest, or add a bit more orange lining.

Dunno about the grain.. if you ever rework this, definitely want to see the clean version (maybe a lighter amount at least - thumb looks cartoony but extreme grain does too).

Lack of people... I think it fits for 2 reasons: downtown is deserted late at night (really different place then), and lack of people forces the question to the viewer and is provocative. And those are my misinformed thoughts.

Anyway, definitely kick ass piece

That looks pretty damn cool man. I wouldn't give it an A++, just because it doesnt look photo-realistic. It would be better if you could get a bird's eye view of a city like New York or LA. It would be harder, but the outcome would be much more effective. Overall, very nice! You deserve this daily dev.

Thanks all. I appreciate it and it's great to get the DD.

For my photo manipulation work, I like to keep building up my photo library of items. For instance, I organize all the original photos I take so I can find things easily. Then I also work on building up a stock image library from various sources. I earn my living as a designer, so i've had to invest in buying a lot of stock art. Also, for a lot of my other works, I use various free sources, like the nasa archieves.

Thanks again.
