Gosh thank you ;o; My process was this:
1: stare at the flat colors and wonder how you're going to do it
2. cry
3. apply a crapload of Multiply and Luminosity layers
4. cry some more
5. finish and hope it doesn't look like poop
Haha, but in all seriousness, I used a lot of airbrushing in particular to get the soft light feel, then used heavier brush strokes for highlights. Most of it was experimental, though.

I use Sketchbook pro. Its fantastic. The only downside is I wouldn't know if it was possible to make an animation

Yes you can have up to 18 layers

Well, I actually use Paint Tool Sai to animate things, but it's the same concept: just draw a frame of animation on each layer, then save each layer as individual pictures (Layer 1 would be Frame 1, etc.). Then I use a program called Photoscape, which you can use to make an animated GIF using all the saved frames. Photoscape is free and you can do other things with it too~
