Um... not really.
Cliff notes version: Sombra was not actually a pony but a Umbrum, A shadow creature. his kind turned him into a pony so he could destroy the crystal Heart because it's power kept them trapped underground. He was found and raised after his metamorphosis by Princess Amoria (Cadances mom) in the Crystal Empire. During that time he developed a close friendship with a filly named Hope. Once older his dark side took over and he used his powers to shatter Princess Amoria into thousands of shards and took the crystal heart and enslaved the ponies of the Crystal Empire. (The MLP show picks up here)
But after Twilight defeats him and only his horn is left the show stops there. The story does not however. Hope returns to restore him and manages to do so. Some bad things happen but only briefly then Sombra with the help of Hope sees the light and reforms. The two of them are now traveling Equestria and collecting all the shards of Princess Amoria to restore her! Great stuff!
