Description
Here's the promised tutorial on making artificial fire, the tutorial was written for Paint.NET as that is the software that I use but I'm fairly certain this is transportable to Photoshop and possibly even GIMP.For a life sample, I used the fire as a background to Dante's Inferno
Feedback, questions, comments, post below. If you use it to make something that you upload to dA, I'd appreciate a link as well.

What if I don't want my flames to be on a black background?

You may have figured this out in the mean time (I've been gone from the site for a while), if you want your flames on a different background, simply select a different primary colour before or after selecting the gradient tool (do it before drawing the gradient itself). Similarly, you can right click on any colour to set that colour as your alternative secondary colour so as to add further diversity to the background colours (and flame colours).

here is a flames plugin for PDN that crates a simmilar effect but i think these flames look more realistic
