Ehhh...sort of. The guide was made for kids but is was really well put together.
Basically it said that Gill was a brat who liked to cause trouble and he eventually disobeyed his parents when they told him not to go into open water (ohboiwonderwhatdatsoundslikehurr) where he was captured and from then on we sort of know what happened in the movie.
Guess it explains that loner personality but I don't know, even as a kid it sounded weird to me.
