Description "Spectre One, I'm going in. I won't be able to keep in radio contact, but I need to check this. It's .. it's big."
"Big? How big?" Cayman, the Spectre's netrunner sounded worried. She did not like the voice of her leader. It's was too calm, too cold. Something was really bothering him.
"I don't know. I ... I think I found ... home."
Being the result of an ingenious lab project the young freelancer bear hybrid was not born naturally. Instead he has been artificially gestated, modified, implanted and conditioned for combat, resulting in a much younger age than his looks would suggest, only 14 years old. That and the fact that he never had a childhood.
"Please Ghostbear, just be careful." pleaded another voice over the com channel, belonging to his best friend and second-in-command Cobalt. "You shouldn't have gone alone."
"I will be careful, don't worry. The place has been abandoned for years now. I will report in as soon as I'm back on the surface. Out" Without another word he wrenched oped the old hatch, gripped his weapon harder and entered the airlock that led into the darkness.

Fourty minutes later he had already ventured deep into the compound, a mace of abandoned laboratories and storage units. Carefully making his way through the old research complex until he finally reached the laboratory he was looking for. Managing to startup an old backup generator the lights hesitantly flashed up, cold blue light illuminating the room.
"Oh god..." was all he could say. Broken and abandoned gestation tanks with their inhabitants still inside. Dead, but preserved by the greenish liquid. Bloody operation tables, syringes and IV bags lying around. Bitter bile rose up in his throat and he had to fight hard to keep his lunch down.
Trying to shut out the terrible scene around him he started one of the computer terminals, using Cayman's ICE-breaker virus to gain access. The data stored in there confirmed what he already knew. This _was_ home, this was the place where they ... made him. He quickly downloaded the data, somehow he managed to suppress his emotions, when a strange ripple behind him caught his attention.
The big mirror on the wall suddenly glowed with an eerie light, ripples of energy floating around the surface, when something happened that was never supposed to happen.
Two parallel worlds intermingling for a short moment. Two realities that should never have touched connected through the mirror.
Unbelieving he stared at the completely impossible scene in front of him.
A little bear, only a few years younger than his real age, looked back at him. Honey colored eyes wide with surprise and curiosity but no fear as he placed his paw at the mirror from his side. That bear, it was impossible but it was .. him. The same hooded sweater, the same face, the same streak of fur, only dyed in a bright purple color. Even the earrings were the same. And that room ...
Somehow the little bear's child room mirrored the laboratory. A crib instead of the gestation tanks, a skipping rope instead of a discarded IV line, a garland continuing as a pipe.
Staring at the little lynx plushie his parallel self was holding in his paws and then on the SMG he himself was grasping it's suddenly hit him like a punch. The lynx was the child's best friend. And his weapon ... Ouch.
Suddenly the freelancer had to fight back tears as he realized that he never had something like that. No childhood, none at all. Thrown into a brutal, cold world.
No innocence.

Trying hard not to cry he placed his own paw against the younger bear's paw, who was still looking back in childlike innocence and curiosity.
Two worlds, just separated by a mirror.
The freelancer stood there for a long time ... even after the image had faded and the connection between both worlds had been broken.

----

Wow. I have to admit that I'm totally stunned by this work had created for me.
So much emotion, so many small details. Amazing lighting, warm and comfy on one side, cold and hard on the other, capturing the scene really perfectly.
Not sure what to say, just "Thank you sooooooooo much"!
You really did great!
Please people .. hop over and tell her that as well. Thank you!

I mean, keep drawing the cub version of Sasch' by all means if you and others want it, but I must see his fast, rogue side, weather it's you or me who puts out art of that version first.

Both side make up what's inside me. Just a little more extreme.
I mean obviously I'm neither a augmented ex-soldier nor a little kid... but I do have a lighthearted and a dark side in me.
One of several "soul pictures", picture the artists I commissioned created for me and they just made it perfect.

As for the character, please don't.
The freelancer has a complex backstory and, as I said, the character itself is deeply rooted in myself. Part of myself so to speak, not just a roleplay character and I would not feel comfortable with other people using him.
So with that as an explanation, I hope you can understand.

Oh my goodness.  This is...powerful.
I think I understand why he behaves like a younger child sometimes.  I can't imagine not having a childhood or at least the chance to be a child.
I feel sympathy for this character now.

Oh, and those two sentences: "The lynx was the child's best friend. And his weapon ... Ouch."
Interestingly, in America at least, a lot of peoples' weapons are also their best friends.

Ghostbear2k In reply to JackofAllAss [2015-05-07 06:00:19 +0000 UTC]

Mh, he doesn't. Actually. ^.^' The little side and this side are completely separate.
So if you see a picture of an older child behaving like a lil one, it's still my cubfur side, just a bit older.

That Freelancer remains the darker side in a very harsh world. Behaving like a child would probably get him killed very fast, because he let his guard down. And that pacifier tied to his pants is just a symbol, it's not actually in use or something. ^^'
But yeah, it's not a nice life he leads and I pretty much torment him with it.

I don't know much about gun policy in the US, only that I'm glad we don't have that here. I would not feel very comfy if everybody can run around with a gun. But for him ... it's still true.
His weapons (technically not only his PDW, but also his other weapons like his sword and assault rifle) are a means to protect himself and his friends. So, in a way, the weapon is his best friend.
And it makes a very hard contrast to the little stuffed lynx the lynx one is holding.
A lynx plushie that his best friend in character. And it is my favorite plushie in the real world.
Yes, Sammy is real :3 That lil long tailed lynx is usually sitting in my bed, getting cuddles at night ^.^'

JackofAllAss In reply to Ghostbear2k [2015-05-07 07:44:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh.  Ok.  That's why the Freelancer was saying something about how that's a childhood he never had.
Wow.  I still feel bad for Freelancer Ghosty.  That would suck, not having a childhood and having to constantly worry about getting killed.  That's no way for a 14-year-old to live.  Sadly, though, many 14-year-old's still do live that way.
Thank you for making the difference clear.
So why does the cubfur side wear diapers into adolescence?  Does he just enjoy it?

I can't force you to accept something, but I'd hate for you to get the wrong idea about something as important as the right to keep and bear arms, especially since it's something you don't seem to understand.
I assure you that there's a very important reason for the right to keep and bear arms.  It keeps the people safe from tyrannical governmental oppression and also allows them to respond quickly to threats to their well-being and the well-being of their loved ones.  If one's home were being invaded by someone else with a gun, it'd give the person being invaded a much better chance of survival if they were armed as well.  The local law enforcement can only get there so fast and a lot can happen in a short amount of time.  It should also be noted that if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns (not a very safe situation for law-abiding citizens).  Another important fact to note is that one of the first steps taken by the most notorious dictators of the past in their rise to power was the disarmament of the people.  Stalin, Hitler and Mao Tse Tung (just to name a few) all made sure to take the guns away from the people they intended to rule over.  I don't want that kind of stuff happening in my homeland, sir.
So, to tell you true, I would feel much less safe if I were denied the right to keep and use a gun.
Until you learn more about the gun policy in the US and the historical reason for it, I think it would be fair for you to withhold judgement on it.

He was tank-bred and augmented and pulled out of the gestation tank at a certain age, brain washed, trained and then sent into battle. Or better, into his job as Team leader/Commando of a megacorp illegal Special OPs Team. He didn't know of his real age and history until he rebelled.
But yeah, it's not a life I would wish on anybody.

Mh not adolescence. Or, I don't know if he does. He usually has an age range from 5 - 12, I'm not sure what would happen if he gets older. But I don't know about older ages.
And about needing ... the certainly needs them at night. As for the daytime, it depends on the age. When younger I'd say he definitely needs them as his control is pretty bad. It get's a lil better over the years but he always has a lot of very close calls, control remains wobbly at best, there is only very small time window and he very easily get's distracted. ^.^''

Point taken.
I might not agree really with you on that matter, but I do fully respect your opinion and you're absolutely entitled to that. Wouldn't want it to be any other way.
I could quote Voltaire, but I'm sure you know this quote, so ...

Good for him for rebelling.  I hope he finds peace some day.

Oh.  I see.  I admit that it took me a while to get it right, too.  I'll still carry an extra pair of drawers with me, just in case.

Ah yes.  I do know that quote.
And thank you.

So far the only solution to his problem (aka taking on a Megacorp with a little group of Freelancers) is not a very good one. ^^'
If I stay realistic than he can survive quite some time with his training/augmentation, bunch of Commandos and Specialists and
some kind of Asymmetric warfare. But ultimately, it will probably cost him his life.

I was pretty fast as a kid, but I still suffer from certain nighttime phases myself. Not all the time but sometimes.
And for the lil one... it's not that he doesn't like it. That's certainly a point too. It's comfy, secure and avoid embarrasing situations.

You're welcome.

This...was not what he had was it? In a parallel universe, you have so much...but in reality your back is against the wall. Gosh, must be heart breaking to see yourself...looking back at you. *shivers* wow, I'm looking over his shoulder, watching him...look up to himself...with wishful eyes. And as he mirrors the little cubs fascination, he knows...that this is a life he has yet to live, or has already lived.

*sigh* Mirror the world, and you will become the very evil you sought out to destroy, but find a mirror, a link between worlds, and you will find what you must protect.

He's seeing something he never had and never will have again. And that's a pretty harsh blow if you wake up one day with your life shattered to pieces... and you found out that you never were a child. That they built you and ripped you out of the tank, fully grown, augmented and combat ready.

Make it a noble one...gallant. But, the good guy never dies...he grows stronger, resilient, he will come back again to finish the job.  "The misconception of light...is the dawn of darkness."  I'm not saying that he wouldn't die...or that he would, an undetermined fate is powerful.

I don't know you, but that doesn't keep me from talking. Who am I to say what will happen, I am a weary traveler. I walk the desolate sands of time, and in my lifetime I have not found a story...with such meaning. I salute you, odd...isn't it? Me for that matter. I could only wish to have been as great as you, but who will walk this path if I don't? I wouldn't wish this upon anyone else. You are inspirational, but my time here is short...thank you, somehow this little chat...makes me feel safe. *sigh* what am I do be, if not the wanderer of the seven seas of time. So long friend, and my our paths cross soon.

The guys never die, but he is not one of them.
Not a noble warrior of light and not the hero. The things he already did, the things he had to do, the things he will do in the future, that is more than enough to condemn him forever.
All he wants is to live another day and make it possible for his friends to live. Even if he is hurting them by not opening up to them or make it possible for his closest friend to become his partner.
But at least they might live on for now.
In the end however they will almost certainly lose. No way a team of four friends can survive a fight against the corporation forever, no matter how capable they are.

But thank you for your words nevertheless.

Where there is darkness, light will prevail. Let it not be their past or future that determines this one, he is the light in the darkness, a force to be reckoned with. If I could...I wouldn't let him die...not for what it's worth. I'd do my best to keep him alive, even if it would mean giving up my own.

That would be probably a bit too harsh.
I just like to take a break from the stressful adult world every now and then. Being a cub helps. But I do know when I have to be a responsible grown-up person, it doesn't affect my normal life.

Oh okay. I get it, I hope it was that. Some people on FA do that other thing I said and it makes me feel funny. But that's okay if you like cubbing. It's just that you said something about "never having a childhood" That caught me offguard.

My grown-up fursona never had a childhood. His background story is a bit scifi (or cyberpunk to be more exact), so he was created in a lab and pulled out of the tank as a teenager.
My littlefur side however is very much of a child. So my babyfur side is not just the younger version of my adult... they exist in parallel worlds.
I just liked the idea of them meeting during a short moment in time when realities overlap. I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who and I like the tv-series Sliders. That gave me the idea for the picture
